‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Hits a Historic Number, But One Record Is Still Just Out of Reach

Blockbuster milestones have come fast and furious for Marvel and Sony’s latest web-slinging adventure this year, with the film racking up superlatives at a pace few franchises ever manage. Even as competition has heated up in theaters, one title has continued piling up numbers that place it among cinema’s true all-time heavyweights.

That streak of dominance hasn’t gone entirely unchallenged in recent weeks, with rival releases occasionally chipping away at its grip on the charts. Still, the sheer scale of what this film has accomplished continues to overshadow any temporary shifts at the top.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has now crossed $2.4 billion at the global box office, with $1.485 billion coming from international markets and $917.8 million domestically through Sunday. That total makes it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, trailing only ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.799 billion.

Deadline reports that the film’s domestic total will climb to $923 million through Monday, keeping its ascent up the all-time charts steady even as its weekend win streak faced its first real interruption in over a month. That milestone alone places Brand New Day in rarefied company at the worldwide box office.

The film is also closing in on a major North American record. According to Deadline, Brand New Day sits just $13.66 million away from surpassing Disney and Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and its $936.66 million total to become the highest-grossing movie ever released domestically.

That particular record now looks well within reach given the film’s continued momentum, though Deadline notes that catching ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the global box office remains a far steeper climb, with the gap between the two films still too wide to realistically close. Endgame’s $2.799 billion worldwide total continues to sit comfortably out of reach for the foreseeable future.

Even so, the film’s box office run has already rewritten plenty of history. According to Screen Daily, Brand New Day became the biggest ‘Spider-Man’ film of all time earlier in its run, overtaking 2021’s ‘No Way Home’ and its $1.92 billion total, while also ranking as the third-biggest MCU release ever behind only ‘Endgame’ and ‘Infinity War’.

The film reached $2 billion worldwide after just 19 days in theaters, according to Screen Daily, making it the second-fastest film ever to hit that mark behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ itself. That kind of pace underscores just how quickly audiences turned out for Tom Holland’s latest outing as the wall-crawler.

Competition from Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has added an unexpected wrinkle to the film’s dominance in recent days, with Nolan’s epic briefly overtaking Brand New Day on both the daily domestic chart and the global weekend chart for the first time since Spider-Man’s July 31 debut, according to Screen Rant. Still, Brand New Day’s overall total remains far ahead of any single competitor at this stage of its run.

With the domestic record now within striking distance and its worldwide total continuing to climb, Brand New Day is shaping up as one of the defining box office stories of the year, regardless of which title wins any given weekend.
