Paul Bettany Finally Explains What Really Happened When Jac Schaeffer Left ‘VisionQuest’

Marvel’s television trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ has always felt like a singular creative vision, built on the specific sensibility Jac Schaeffer brought to Vision and Wanda’s story from the very beginning. So when word spread that Schaeffer wouldn’t be returning to close out the trilogy she started, it raised real questions about what happened behind the scenes.

That trilogy was originally meant to end with Schaeffer completing the arc she’d built across ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’, bringing her singular voice to Vision’s final chapter. Instead, ‘Star Trek: Picard’ veteran Terry Matalas stepped in to take over showrunning duties, a transition that happened fast enough to catch even Paul Bettany off guard.

Now, Bettany has opened up about exactly how that handoff unfolded, and just how personally jarring the timing was for him. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Bettany attributed Schaeffer’s departure to personal reasons, describing the abrupt transition as something that genuinely destabilized him emotionally in the moment.

“I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet,” Bettany told the outlet, reflecting on learning that Schaeffer wouldn’t be finishing the story she’d built with him from the start. “I love her very much, and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac,” he continued, underscoring just how much he’d been anticipating working directly with her on this final chapter.

That emotional whiplash, Bettany explained, happened almost instantly. “And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel moves,” he said, describing the dizzying pace at which the studio pivoted from one creative vision to another.

Schaeffer herself has previously spoken about the decision, framing it as a scheduling conflict rather than any deeper falling out. She’s explained that ‘Agatha All Along’ and ‘VisionQuest‘ ended up overlapping in a way that simply wasn’t workable for her, calling it a decision made “with a very heavy heart” while stressing her continued enthusiasm for the project moving forward without her.

Despite the sudden transition, Bettany has made clear he came around quickly to Matalas’s vision for the series. According to Bettany, Matalas’s pitch centered on exploring what he called “intergenerational digital trauma,” a thematic angle that immediately resonated with the actor. Bettany says he was fully won over once Matalas proposed bringing James Spader back into the fold as Ultron, a casting decision that’s since become one of the show’s biggest selling points.

Schaeffer hasn’t disappeared from the project entirely, either. She remains credited as an executive producer on ‘VisionQuest’, alongside Matalas, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, and Mary Livanos, suggesting her creative fingerprints are still present even without her serving as showrunner.

The series itself continues the story of White Vision, who regained his memories at the end of ‘WandaVision’ and has spent the years since grappling with his fractured identity. With Matalas now steering the ship, ‘VisionQuest’ is positioned to close out the trilogy Schaeffer started, even if the journey to get there wasn’t quite as smooth as fans might have expected.

For Bettany, the experience seems to have ultimately deepened his appreciation for both collaborators, even as he’s been candid about how disorienting the sudden transition felt in real time. ‘VisionQuest’ premieres on Disney+ on October 14.
