‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Make Box Office History, Here’s How Close It Really Is

Domestic box office records rarely feel within reach for more than a decade at a time, but that’s exactly the position Tom Holland’s latest Marvel outing finds itself in right now. Few films manage to stay culturally relevant six weekends into their theatrical run, let alone remain the single highest-grossing new release in the country week after week.

That kind of staying power has become the defining story of this particular Spidey adventure’s summer. Since its record-breaking debut in late July, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has methodically worked its way up the all-time domestic charts, shattering benchmark after benchmark along the way with a consistency that’s become genuinely rare in the modern theatrical landscape.

Now, the film has reached its most significant milestone yet, crossing $923 million domestically after a sixth consecutive weekend at number one. That total leaves it just $13 million behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which has held the record for the highest-grossing domestic release of all time since 2015 with $936 million, not adjusted for inflation.

Given the film’s current trajectory, box office trackers widely expect ‘Brand New Day’ to claim that record within the coming week, officially becoming the highest-grossing movie ever released at the North American box office. That would cap off an extraordinary run that’s already included the biggest domestic opening weekend in history and the fastest climb to $900 million domestically, a mark it reached in just 36 days compared to ‘The Force Awakens’s 50-day pace.

The film’s six-weekend reign at number one places it in genuinely rare company. According to reporting, ‘Brand New Day’ now joins ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and the first two ‘Avatar’ films as among the last movies to hold the top spot for six straight weeks, a feat that’s only been matched a handful of times across multiple decades, including ‘Titanic’, ‘The Fugitive’, and ‘Home Alone’ during the 1990s, with no film managing the feat at all between 1998 and 2008.

Globally, the film’s dominance tells an equally impressive story. ‘Brand New Day’ has now surpassed $2.4 billion worldwide, positioning it as the third-highest-grossing film ever released, trailing only ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.7 billion. While it’s unlikely to overtake either of those two films for the worldwide crown, particularly with ‘Endgame’ set to add further receipts through its own September theatrical re-release, ‘Brand New Day’ has already cemented itself among the most successful theatrical releases in cinema history.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film has benefited from a combination of strong critical reception and a notably light competitive field throughout its run, factors that have allowed it to maintain box office momentum well past the point most blockbusters typically begin fading. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which also stars Holland, has held steady in second place throughout much of that stretch, itself putting together an impressive eighth-weekend performance without ever seriously threatening Spidey’s grip on the top spot.

With the finish line for the all-time domestic record now clearly in sight, all that remains is watching exactly how large a margin ‘Brand New Day’ ultimately claims once it officially passes ‘The Force Awakens’. Given the film’s remarkably consistent weekend-to-weekend holds, that record-breaking moment appears to be a matter of when, not if.
