‘Reacher’ Season 4 Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained: A Surprise Ally Saves the Day
‘Reacher‘ has spent much of its fourth season slowly tightening the screws on its central conspiracy, and the penultimate episode finally starts paying off that patience. After a season that mixed fast-paced setup with a few stretches of slower plotting, things kick into high gear just in time for the countdown to the finale.
The episode, titled “Vote For Sampson,” dropped on Prime Video on September 9 and picks up directly where things left off after a brutal cliffhanger. Reacher and Detective Tamara Green were left facing near-certain death in the woods, while Jacob Merrick sat in police custody, seemingly out of options.
That grim setup gets flipped almost immediately, though, when an unexpected ally intervenes to save Reacher and Green from execution, setting the stage for the team to finally uncover what’s actually been driving the season’s conspiracy from the start.
A Timely Rescue From Springfield
Reacher and Green are picked up in a van, doors opening as their captors prepare to finish the job. Before that can happen, Springfield, who works for Congressman Sampson, intervenes and takes out the men transporting them. Springfield had been dispatched by Sampson to investigate the mysterious photo at the center of the season, and spotting Reacher and Green being loaded into the van gave him the opening he needed to step in.
With Green and Springfield now backing him up, Reacher wastes no time getting back to work. He runs down Leo Ahlquist and forces answers out of him, finally learning what the photo actually depicts: chemical weapons research containing a formula that, combined with AI assistance, could produce a weapon of mass destruction.

The episode also clarifies where various players actually stand. Sampson didn’t know about the weapons research, since he would have shut it down immediately if he had, while his former commander Cahill was aware the whole time and warned Ahlquist to try retrieving the photo before it could be used against them. With the formula now in the hands of Lila and Amisha, the danger becomes very real.
Meanwhile, Jacob gets an unexpected break of his own. Detective Docherty, who had been transporting him, realizes there’s something bigger going on and lets him go instead of taking him to jail, offering further help if needed. Jacob reunites with Reacher and Green and fills them in, just as the team learns that Lila and Amisha are planning to sell their weapon at an upcoming dark web auction, meaning they’ll need to run a test first.
A Failed Trap And A Race To Save Sampson
The team initially believes the test will happen in Philadelphia and narrows down a likely target, with Docherty pulling in police backup to shut it down. The plan falls apart when Lila and Amisha never show, leaving Docherty embarrassed and the team back at square one.
Reacher pivots and reaches out to Sampson again, suspecting the real target might be the morning rush hour instead. It turns out the actual target is something much closer to Sampson himself: his own campaign fundraiser. Since Sampson was responsible for taking out the general Amisha once worked for, he becomes a logical target for the attack.
How The Episode Ends
As Reacher and the team race toward the fundraiser, Sampson puts his own training to use and spots the suicide bomber before anyone else can. Reacher arrives just as things reach a breaking point, but it’s Sampson who ultimately makes the decisive move, tackling the bomber and driving him into a nearby river right as the bomb detonates.
The episode closes with the season’s central conspiracy finally coming into full focus, setting up a likely explosive confrontation for the finale. With the formula now a known threat and Lila and Amisha still on the loose, ‘Reacher’ Season 4 Episode 8 arrives on September 16, promising to bring the season’s stakes to a head.
Who do you think will be the biggest threat in the Reacher finale?
