Late-night television has weathered a rough stretch over the past year, with shakeups, suspensions, and shifting audience habits reshaping the genre in ways nobody quite expected. Amid all that turbulence, Jimmy Kimmel has remained one of the format’s most consistent fixtures, hosting his ABC show since 2003 and building a run that now trails only Johnny Carson in longevity among single-network late-night hosts.

That steady presence is now facing fresh uncertainty. Reports surfaced this week suggesting Kimmel’s time behind the desk may be winding down, sparking immediate questions about what comes next for one of network television’s longest-running franchises.

According to a report first published by Page Six, ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ is expected to end after the show’s upcoming season, with Kimmel’s contract not being renewed once his current deal expires in May 2027. TMZ later confirmed similar details, reporting that staff have been discussing the possibility that Kimmel has been quietly pitching other shows and podcasts around town.

Despite the wave of reporting, ABC wasted no time disputing the claims. A network spokesperson told E! News that the information being circulated is inaccurate, adding that any reports about the show’s future at this point are purely speculative.

That denial has done little to quiet the speculation, especially given how Kimmel has structured his recent contracts. Rather than locking in another multi-year deal, Kimmel has reportedly been working on a year-to-year basis, and he’s spoken openly in interviews over the past several months about eventually stepping away from the show for good.

This wouldn’t be the first time Kimmel has flirted with the idea of walking away. He signed a three-year deal back in 2022 that extended his run through 2027, but he’s admitted in the years since that his commitment to staying on air has wavered more than once.

Kimmel has also scaled back his workload in other ways recently, taking summers off in past seasons even as he returned for new episodes this week. Those adjustments, combined with his year-to-year contract structure, have only added fuel to speculation that a full exit may not be far off.

Whatever happens with the show’s future, this current run has already been an eventful one. ABC temporarily pulled Kimmel off the air roughly a year ago after he made comments about Charlie Kirk’s killing, a suspension that triggered a nationwide conversation about broadcast standards and free speech.

FCC chairman Brendan Carr had encouraged local broadcasters to drop the show entirely following those comments, and stations owned by Nexstar and Sinclair continued to preempt it even after ABC reinstated Kimmel days later. That controversy, layered on top of his ongoing public feud with President Trump, has made the past year one of the more turbulent stretches of Kimmel’s entire late-night career.

For now, Kimmel appears to be moving forward as usual, having already kicked off his new season this week and picking up an Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Game Show for his work on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ this past weekend. Nothing about that recent activity suggests an imminent departure, even as reports about his contract status continue to circulate.

With ABC firmly denying the reports and Kimmel himself staying quiet on the matter, the true state of his late-night future remains murky heading into the new season. Whether this ends up being the beginning of the end or simply another round of unfounded speculation will likely become clearer as his current contract inches closer to its May 2027 expiration.
