The Toledo Truth Teller swept its awards and Ned Sampson and Mare Pritti kissed in the aftermath, and then the documentary crew stopped filming and went away for a year before returning for this new chapter. That gap in time sets up a season that has to answer what happens after the will they won’t they finally resolves itself.

The Journalistic Crusade at the Center of ‘The Paper’ Season 2

Season 2 follows the Toledo Truth Teller team fresh off their win at the Ohio Journalism Awards, with Ned searching for a journalistic crusade, which he decides is coming for a local private club that jeopardizes the paper. Peacock’s official logline frames it as Ned going looking for a crusade, taking aim at a local private club, and putting the paper at risk doing it, while he and Mare work out their attraction and Esmeralda struggles to find her place.

Ned and Mare end up searching for that crusade together and find themselves at her apartment, while later on Mare finds a fabulous story after Ned has a bruising interaction at his cop source’s gun range. The season also weaves in smaller newsroom antics, including a podcast storyline that gets more heated than expected and a company milestone that turns Ned into the subject of his own story.

According to the showrunners, the investigation was always designed to double as an emotional test for Ned. In an exclusive interview with Collider, Greg Daniels explained that the season’s shape involved Ned juggling both his romance and his obligations to the paper, showing off with the crusade, having it blow up in his face, and having to suffer the loss of Mare before redeeming himself by winning her respect back.

How the Ned and Mare Romance Ends in ‘The Paper’ Season 2

The central relationship of the season is the one between Ned and Mare, who spend most of the ten episodes trying to keep their connection out of the office rumor mill. As they date, the show examines workplace romance through a realistic lens, digging into why an office becomes a hotbed for relationships and whether the pair can survive challenges like physical distance, professional passion, and the threat of their secret love affair being discovered.

The finale ultimately resolves Ned’s big crusade in a way that ties directly back to his feelings for Mare. Ned finds that publishing his and Detrick’s big story will require sacrifices, as do other worthwhile things, while Mare has a choice to make if she wants to play in the big leagues. The Glass Club investigation Ned spent the season chasing ultimately becomes Mare’s story instead of his own, with Ned handing off the very thing he had been fighting for all year.

Not every critic is convinced this version of the romance works. One review argued that the pair’s secret relationship spins out in various ways throughout the season but never really deals with the imbalance of power between the two in any real way, and that it makes both characters much dumber, with Ned settling into a bad boss persona with a side of outright stalker.

Others were kinder to the arc, with one outlet noting that by the end of the season, viewers will want to root for Ned and Mare because they clearly love one another, even if their dynamic can feel a little thin as a couple.

The Fates of Esmeralda, Nicole and Detrick

Esmeralda Grand, played by Sabrina Impacciatore, remains the show’s chaos agent even after being humbled in Season 1. Demoted after Ned’s arrival, Esmeralda’s agenda to sabotage him with the help of overbearing middle manager Ken continues in Season 2, to mixed results, and the show does not tone down her histrionics, with her season finale arc arguably just as insufferable as ever. Elsewhere in the season, Esmeralda goes undercover to expose prejudice and later pays a price for embarrassing the company after a podcast segment goes sideways.

Nicole’s storyline also carries over directly from the Season 1 cliffhanger involving Detrick. Detrick ended his relationship with Nicole after she mistakenly believed he had forced her into monogamy while seeing other people, and Nicole later broke down in Mare’s hotel room over the fallout. That emotional thread continues to develop across the new episodes as Nicole reckons with what she actually wants.

Behind the scenes, the showrunners have also been candid about how much of the original ‘Office’ mythology they were willing to bring into this world. Greg Daniels revealed that a larger connection to ‘The Office’ was cut from Season 2 because it risked overshadowing ‘The Paper’ itself, and the showrunners also broke down Nicole’s spiral and how the season’s guest stars came together.

Critics and Fans React to ‘The Paper’ Season 2

The early reviews for the new season have been largely positive, with several critics arguing the show has finally stepped out of ‘The Office’ shadow. One review argued that Season 2 proves ‘The Paper’ can stand on its own two feet and deliver an exceptional new sitcom that rivals anything else currently on television. Another critic offered a similar take, noting that the trajectory of the series feels like it is on track to take ‘The Paper’ to another level and that it has everything it needs to succeed and continue growing into a cherished sitcom.

Not everyone is fully on board with where certain characters land by the end of the season. One critic wrote that Nicole spends most of the season wobbling around and ends in a place that feels regressive, even while acknowledging the show has grown and deserves the chance to continue. Still, the overall consensus from critics is that ‘The Paper’ Season 2 remains one of the funniest comedies on Peacock right now, with many hoping there is more to come.
