‘Average Joe’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Cathy Pulls Another Betrayal Just as the Boys Finally Open Up

‘Average Joe‘ has built its reputation on mixing bloody, small-time action with genuine heart, and that balance has only gotten more complicated as Season 2 barrels toward its end. Joe, Leon, and Touch have spent this stretch of episodes chasing down Teddy’s old clues across Africa, dragging old wounds and new dangers along with them.

That momentum carried directly into the fifth episode, which picked up immediately after the previous hour’s cliffhanger left Imani in serious danger. Rather than jumping ahead to find her already trapped in Sipho’s clutches, the episode opened right where things left off, with Joe refusing to let his sister slip away without a fight.

What followed was a hard sprint through the streets as Joe raced to reach Imani while she fought off her captors on her own. It’s the kind of chaotic, bloody, and unexpectedly funny action sequence the show has built its identity on, though this time the momentum didn’t last, since the chase turned out to be essentially the only major action beat of the hour.

Instead of leaning further into gunfights, the episode pulled back to dig into its characters, starting with the show’s central villain. A flashback revealed that Sipho wasn’t always the ruthless crime lord terrorizing Joe’s group, showing a young boy who watched his mother murdered in church before the man responsible essentially forced the child to take his place, still covered in his mother’s blood. When given the chance to fight back, the boy killed his captor, took his name, and slowly transformed into the man now hunting Joe and his friends.

That same introspective approach extended to Phyllis and Touch, whose connection has been building since earlier in the season. The episode finally explained why Phyllis refused to give up on Touch despite his self-destructive tendencies, revealing that she lost her own sister and channeled that grief into becoming a healer determined to save people others had written off.

That backstory paid off in one of the episode’s most emotional moments, when a spiritual vision featuring Phyllis’s late sister Donna delivered the message that the truth would set Touch free. Shortly after, Touch finally opened up to Joe and Leon about everything he’d been hiding, and rather than pulling away, the two men embraced him, giving the show one of its most genuinely touching scenes to date.

Unfortunately, that warmth didn’t last long once Cathy re-entered the picture. After spending the episode’s opening apologizing to Joe and the group for her past deception, Cathy went behind their backs yet again, calling the police on the dangerous bar the group had infiltrated while following Teddy’s trail, putting everyone in even greater danger right as they were finally making progress.

That repeated pattern of contrition followed by sabotage has become exhausting to watch, even as the show leaves open the possibility that Cathy’s motives might eventually make sense. Whether she’s playing a longer game or simply acting out of selfishness remains one of the season’s most frustrating open questions heading into its final stretch.

Despite the slower pace, the hour still found room for levity, including a lighthearted debate among the guys about R&B singers set against the backdrop of a group singalong, a reminder that even in near-death situations, this show never fully loses its sense of humor.

New episodes of ‘Average Joe’ continue airing weekly on Paramount+ through September 30, leaving several episodes left to resolve Teddy’s mystery, Sipho’s growing instability, and whatever Cathy is really up to.
