Sacha Baron Cohen Is Trading Borat for Broadway-Style Theater in Quentin Tarantino’s Surprising Stage Debut
Quentin Tarantino has spent decades building one of the most distinctive voices in modern cinema, known for genre-blending scripts packed with sharp dialogue and unforgettable characters. After teasing plans to step away from filmmaking for his purported final movie, the director has instead pivoted toward an entirely different medium altogether.
That pivot is Tarantino’s first-ever stage play, and it’s bringing along an equally surprising leading man. Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedian best known for characters like Borat and Ali G, is set to make his own stage debut playing the title role in Tarantino’s upcoming production, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier.’
The play is billed as a “swashbuckling comedy” set in 1830s Europe, with producers describing it as “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” According to the official synopsis, it aims to be “a sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ is being produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, the team behind ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ and ‘Paddington: The Musical,’ alongside Sony Pictures Entertainment. The show is set to open at a still-undisclosed West End venue in London during spring 2027, marking not just Tarantino’s first stage production, but Baron Cohen’s stage debut as well.
While Baron Cohen has built his career primarily around film and television, this won’t be his first brush with theatrical performance. He previously appeared in the 2007 film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd,’ playing Signor Adolfo Pirelli, giving him at least some connection to musical theater tradition heading into this fully staged production.
The casting news arrives at a particularly busy moment for Baron Cohen, who’s set to reprise his comedy character Ali G in the upcoming Amazon MGM feature ‘Ali G Who Iz I?,’ releasing globally in October. Between the film’s release and now his surprise stage casting, Baron Cohen appears to be leaning hard into nostalgic and boundary-pushing comedic territory heading into the new year.
For Tarantino, the project represents a genuine creative departure after years of speculation about his long-promised tenth and reportedly final film. The director has previously said he’s in “no hurry” to complete that movie, and has indicated ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ could take up to two years from start to finish, suggesting this theatrical detour isn’t a brief side project but a substantial undertaking in its own right.
