Mel Gibson Praises New Jesus Actor Ahead Of ‘The Passion Of The Christ’ Sequel
Mel Gibson has spent more than two decades teasing a follow-up to his controversial 2004 blockbuster ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ a film that became the highest-grossing independent movie of all time despite its brutal, unflinching approach to Christ’s final hours. Fans have waited patiently through years of stalled development, shifting release windows, and constant speculation about what exactly the sequel would even look like.
That wait is finally nearing its end, though not without a significant curveball along the way. When Gibson confirmed the project was moving forward under the title ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,’ longtime fans assumed Jim Caviezel would simply reprise the role that defined his career, especially given how vocally Caviezel had championed the project over the years.
Instead, Gibson opted for a complete recast, handing the role of Jesus to Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen rather than de-aging Caviezel through visual effects. Now, months after that decision sparked plenty of fan debate, Gibson is speaking out for the first time about how the new lead has handled stepping into such an iconic role.
Asked whether Ohtonen’s portrayal would differ from Caviezel’s original performance, Gibson didn’t hold back his praise, noting that Ohtonen is a different actor but has done an excellent job, describing his performance as both human and peacefully detached, in comments reported by Collider.
The decision to recast came down to a fairly practical problem rather than any creative disagreement. Caviezel, now 57, would have needed extensive de-aging effects to convincingly portray Jesus at around age 33, the age most religious traditions associate with the resurrection, since the sequel picks up just three days after the crucifixion depicted in the original film.
Rather than relying on costly and potentially distracting de-aging technology, Gibson and his team chose to rebuild the cast from the ground up. Alongside Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga has stepped into the role of Mary Magdalene previously played by Monica Bellucci, while Kasia Smutniak takes over as Mary, mother of Jesus, and Riccardo Scamarcio plays Pontius Pilate.
Ohtonen, best known for playing Wolland in Netflix’s ‘The Last Kingdom,’ brought a level of preparation that clearly impressed Gibson during production. The director specifically praised how effortlessly Ohtonen handled the Sermon on the Mount, noting he needed no prompting and simply delivered the material in a way Gibson described as amazing.
Unlike the original film’s tightly focused final-hours narrative, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is shaping up to be a far more sprawling, ambitious project. Gibson has revealed the two-part sequel will venture well beyond the resurrection itself, exploring events including the fall of Satan, the Garden of Eden, and the war in heaven.
That expanded scope reflects years of development work between Gibson and longtime collaborator Randall Wallace, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind ‘Braveheart,’ who has described the project as something deeply personal for Gibson rather than a simple cash-in on the original’s success. Gibson has previously compared the finished script to an acid trip, emphasizing just how far the story strays from a straightforward chronological retelling.
‘The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One’ is currently set to hit theaters on May 6, 2027, with Part Two following on May 25, 2028. Given how much weight Gibson’s comments about Ohtonen carry for skeptical fans still mourning Caviezel’s absence, this early vote of confidence could go a long way toward easing concerns heading into the film’s release.
