Marvel’s New X-Men Reboot Star, Maya Boyd, Commands the Runway at Calvin Klein
Marvel’s rebuilt mutant lineup has only existed in the public eye for a few weeks, but its newest breakout star is already proving she knows how to command attention outside the world of comic books. Maya Boyd, the Broadway performer tapped to bring one of the X-Men’s most iconic characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has spent the time since her casting announcement steadily building her own moment in the spotlight.
That momentum has extended well beyond superhero fandom circles. Boyd has become a genuine fixture of entertainment news cycles lately, with fans closely tracking everything from her comic book research to her red carpet appearances as anticipation builds ahead of her big-screen debut.
That attention reached a new peak this week when Boyd stepped out for Calvin Klein’s runway show during New York Fashion Week, drawing widespread praise for her look at the event. Photos from her appearance quickly circulated online, with fans and fashion outlets alike taking notice of her styling for the high-profile fashion moment.
Boyd’s presence at a major fashion week event signals just how quickly her profile has grown since Marvel Studios officially confirmed her casting. She’ll be playing Ororo Munroe, better known to fans as Storm, in the studio’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, one of the character’s most anticipated live-action portrayals to date.
Marvel confirmed Boyd’s casting during its D23 presentation, fulfilling years of fan requests for an actress who could authentically embody Storm’s African heritage on screen. Boyd, a graduate of the University of Michigan, made her Broadway debut in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ in September 2023 while still completing her musical theatre degree, before going on to play Juliet in the Broadway production of ‘& Juliet.’
She most recently completed a run starring in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’ opposite Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer, giving her a genuinely eclectic theatrical résumé heading into her first major film role. That background in live theater marks a notable departure from the traditional pipeline many Marvel actors take into the franchise.
Since her casting was confirmed, Boyd has made a visible effort to immerse herself in the character’s comic book history. She’s shared photos of herself reading Storm comics as part of her preparation process, a detail that’s earned her genuine goodwill from longtime fans eager to see a version of the character that stays true to her source material.
Boyd joins a stacked ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Asa Germann as Warren Worthington III, also known as Angel. Adam Driver rounds out the cast as the film’s central villain, Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister.
Director Jake Schreier, best known for helming ‘Thunderbolts*,’ is leading the ensemble into what’s shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most closely watched projects following the conclusion of the studio’s current Avengers saga. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028, giving Boyd a considerable runway before production wraps and marketing kicks into full gear.
Given how much scrutiny this new mutant lineup has already received before a single frame of footage has been shot, Boyd’s growing public profile suggests Marvel has found a genuine breakout star in the making. Between her comic book research and her increasingly high-profile public appearances, fans have plenty of reason to feel optimistic about her eventual take on one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters.
