‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Tramell Tillman Opens up About His Love for X-Men, Fueling Fan Speculation over His MCU Future

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become notoriously secretive about its casting decisions, forcing actors into a strange dance of dodging questions while quietly building anticipation for what’s coming next. Few recent examples illustrate that tension better than the journey Tramell Tillman has been on since joining the franchise.

The ‘Severance’ Emmy winner made his MCU debut earlier this year in a role shrouded in confidentiality right up until release. Now that the character’s identity and arc are public knowledge, Tillman has started opening up more freely about what the role means to him, and his comments are only intensifying speculation about where his story goes next.

Tillman played William “Bill” Metzger in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ a government official leading the Department of Damage Control who ultimately reveals himself as a far more dangerous antagonist tied directly to the franchise’s mutant storyline. In a new interview, Tillman reflected on what it means to be connected to X-Men lore, explaining that he’s always loved the X-Men because the story has consistently centered on characters wielding extreme power while being cast out of society, forced to find their own voice and carve out space for themselves.

Metzger’s comic book counterpart is a relatively obscure but pointed figure, an anti-mutant militia leader introduced in the late 1990s who was ultimately killed by Magneto. In the MCU, the character has been reimagined with ties to Damage Control’s growing antagonistic role, positioning him as a potential architect of anti-mutant sentiment as the franchise moves deeper into its X-Men era.

Tillman has previously discussed how difficult it was navigating Marvel’s secrecy ahead of the film’s release, admitting the process felt frustrating since he wasn’t even sure how his character fit into the larger story until well into the process. He revealed that director Destin Daniel Cretton could only tell him the role was pivotal, forcing him to take what amounted to a leap of faith before signing on.

That leap appears to have paid off. Reports have indicated Tillman signed a multi-picture deal with Marvel that could extend into future X-Men films, a detail that lines up neatly with his character’s unresolved fate after a tense confrontation with Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey in ‘Brand New Day.’ Metzger’s exact status following that encounter was left ambiguous, with Tillman joking that his character is likely on an apology tour after everything he put the young mutant through.

When Marvel unveiled its expanded X-Men cast at D23 this year, including Adam Driver as Mister Sinister and Kit Connor as Cyclops, Tillman was directly asked about the announcement and responded playfully without confirming or denying his own involvement. That kind of coy deflection has become something of a signature for actors navigating Marvel’s press circuit, and Tillman’s comments about his personal connection to X-Men mythology only add fuel to fan theories that his story isn’t finished.

Whether or not Metzger returns for a future mutant-focused installment, Tillman’s remarks suggest a genuine personal investment in the themes that have defined X-Men storytelling for decades. For a character introduced as a morally gray antagonist rather than a clear-cut villain, that kind of thematic resonance could set up a much more complicated redemption arc, or a deeper descent into anti-mutant extremism, depending on which direction Marvel ultimately takes him.
