‘Lanterns’ Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: Why John Stewart Turned Down the Ring
HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ built its first stretch of episodes around a rivalry that felt almost old-fashioned for a superhero show. Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the veteran and the rookie, spent the season’s opening chapters circling each other while investigating a killing in Rushville, Nebraska, each one convinced he was the better fit for the ring.
That structure gave the DC Studios drama room to function more like a grounded detective story than a traditional origin tale, with the show’s shape-shifting Manhunter mystery slowly tightening around the cast. By the time the fifth episode arrived, the partnership between the two Lanterns was already fraying badly.
The episode, titled “Lights Out,” is where that tension finally snaps, closing out the season’s long-running 2016 murder investigation and forcing John into a decision that reshapes the rest of the season. Directed by Geeta Vasant Patel and written by Justin Britt-Gibson, it packed in more action than the show had delivered across its entire first half.
Heading into the episode, John had already admitted to one of the Guardians that he’d spoken against Hal, and the Guardians had voted to remove Hal from his post and install John in his place. That vote came right after the pair separately figured out that Zoe, someone John had grown close to during the investigation, was likely the Manhunter they had spent the season hunting.

The episode picks up from Hal jumping out of a moving vehicle to reach the Manhunter before John could, leaving their already fragile trust in worse shape than ever. John spends the early stretch escaping the hospital, calling his father, and telling his mother his plan is to take the ring directly from Hal’s finger if that’s what it takes.
Hal, meanwhile, sends invading forces after William Macon by falsely claiming the man is the Manhunter, a plan that ends with Antaan killing Macon and discovering Hal had lied. As Hal tries to subdue Zoe himself, he disposes of Antaan mid-detonation, allowing Zoe to escape while John attacks Hal back at the motel and nearly wrestles the ring away from him.
The Ending Explained
The episode closes with John sitting across from Lianna, the Guardian played by Laura Linney. He tells her Hal is still alive and presents the Manhunter’s heart as proof the threat has been handled, and her response is measured, acknowledging that even the Guardians make mistakes and that all anyone can do afterward is try to correct them.
What follows is the real gut punch. John admits he spent much of his life imagining how it would feel to finally wear the ring, only to find that putting it on left him feeling empty, and he places the blame squarely on what Hal became while clinging to it. Rather than taking the Green Lantern oath in that moment, John hands the ring back to Lianna and simply walks away.
It’s a deliberate swerve by the writers, withholding the expected hero moment right when the story seems to be building toward it. Handing John the ring here would have been the obvious payoff after a season of setup, and the show instead opts for restraint, signaling his arc toward becoming a full-fledged Green Lantern isn’t finished.
What It Means Going Forward
That restraint reframes what kind of show ‘Lanterns’ has been all along. The season has used its detective framework to strip away the usual trappings of a superhero origin story, and closing the 2016 case without immediately crowning John keeps that grounded approach intact heading into the back half of the season.
John’s refusal also leaves the Guardians’ plan in limbo, since they had already voted to remove Hal before Lianna’s response suggested the Guardians are willing to own their own mistakes too. Sinestro’s manipulation of the conflict between the two Lanterns remains another loose thread the show hasn’t resolved, and his influence throughout the earlier timeline suggests a larger agenda still waiting to surface.
With the 2016 mystery resolved, the season now has room to pivot toward consequences rather than setup, jumping into 2026 for the remaining episodes to finally address what happens to Hal Jordan in the present day. ‘Lanterns’ releases one new episode each Sunday, with three chapters remaining after this one and the season finale set for October 4.
