‘Yaga’ Releases New Sneak Peek Ahead of October Premiere on AMC+

Canadian streamer Crave has quietly built a genuine knack for turning genre stories into breakout hits recently, with the queer hockey romance ‘Heated Rivalry’ becoming one of the platform’s biggest success stories of the past year. That momentum is now carrying over into an entirely different kind of series, one that trades the rink for something considerably darker and more mythological.

That new series is ‘Yaga,’ an eight-episode mystery thriller reimagining the legend of Baba Yaga, based on showrunner Kat Sandler’s own hit stage play. The show first teased its existence at San Diego Comic-Con back in July, building steady anticipation ahead of its full rollout this fall.

AMC+ has now released a new sneak peek clip, confirming the series will premiere with two episodes on Friday, October 23, exclusively in the U.S. From there, new episodes will roll out weekly on Fridays, building toward a two-episode finale set for November 27.

The story follows Rapp, a private investigator played by Noah Reid, who arrives in the small coastal town of Whittock to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park, the young heir to a powerful fishery played by Hudson Williams. Rapp’s investigation quickly puts him at odds with an apprehensive local detective, Carson, played by Clark Backo, and a charismatic university professor with a taste for younger men, Katherine, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, pulling him into a web of enigmatic suspects, hidden lives, and ancient magic.

Sandler has spoken about what drew her to reworking the Baba Yaga myth for a modern audience. She described the project as having evolved from myth to stage to her first greenlit series, explaining that the show reclaims the wicked witch archetype and reshapes her into an incendiary feminist antihero for the current moment. She added that the project reflects the kind of storytelling she loves most: propulsive, accessible, dark, funny, and unapologetically bold.

Beyond its four leads, ‘Yaga’ rounds out its cast with Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Ezra Franky, Patrick Gilmore, Katharine Isabelle, and Hiro Kanagawa, alongside Emilija Baranac, Georgia Acken, Anisa Harris, and Sam Krochmal. Moss also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Mackenzie Donaldson and Andrew Miller, with David Frazee and Rachel Talalay directing episodes across the season.

Ahead of its AMC+ debut, ‘Yaga’ will hold its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 17, followed by a dedicated panel revealing exclusive content at New York Comic Con on October 9. That extended promotional rollout, spanning two major genre and film festival appearances before the show even premieres, suggests AMC+ and Crave are treating ‘Yaga’ as a genuine flagship title for their fall slate.

Given the strong pedigree of its cast, spanning Moss’s Matrix legacy, Reid’s Schitt’s Creek fame, and Williams’s recent breakout in ‘Heated Rivalry,’ ‘Yaga’ arrives with real crossover appeal for fans of mystery, horror, and prestige drama alike. With its premiere date now locked in and a fresh clip already circulating, anticipation for the series looks set to keep building right up through its October debut.

The show’s half-hour episode format also sets it apart from many of AMC’s other genre offerings, favoring a tighter, more propulsive pace over the longer runtimes typical of prestige mystery dramas. Combined with Sandler’s background adapting her own stage material for the screen, that structural choice suggests ‘Yaga’ is aiming for a brisk, binge-friendly rhythm once episodes begin rolling out weekly.
