Marvel’s ‘Wolverine’ Lets You Unlock the X-Men ’97 Suit In-Game
Insomniac Games built a devoted following for its Spider-Man titles partly through their deep rosters of unlockable costumes, letting players swing through New York dressed as their favorite version of the character from decades of comics, films, and cartoons. That reputation has fans watching closely to see whether Marvel’s Wolverine can deliver the same kind of fan service.
The game takes a different narrative approach than most X-Men media, setting its story in a world where mutants are feared and the X-Men haven’t yet formed as an established team. According to Insomniac, that choice was deliberate, since starting the story with the X-Men already in existence would have given mutants a built-in safe haven the developers wanted players to see them living without. Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release September 15.
Ahead of launch, new footage has confirmed one of the game’s most anticipated unlockable outfits: a faithful recreation of Wolverine’s costume from Marvel Animation’s ‘X-Men ’97,’ complete with its distinctive cel-shaded animated look. The suit brings Logan’s classic yellow and blue design, tiger-stripe detailing, and red belt straight from the acclaimed Disney+ revival series into the game.

Players can craft the X-Men ’97 suit after starting the chapter “Way Down Low,” and equipping it also unlocks a matching set of animated-style claws to complete the look. Unlocking suits in Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t purely cosmetic either, since each new costume also boosts Wolverine’s overall health, giving players a functional incentive to track down every outfit as they progress through the story.
Director Mike Daly has spoken about why Insomniac prioritized letting players craft and customize suits throughout the game. He explained that as a fan of Wolverine himself, it’s genuinely fun to see the look of your favorite version of the character, telling Deadline that the team built out its roster of suits by pulling from the versions of Wolverine they knew would be most exciting and recognizable to fans.
Marvel Games executive producer Eric Monacelli echoed that sentiment, noting just how important broad recognition is to Marvel’s creative team when collaborating with Insomniac on which suits make the cut. Beyond the X-Men ’97 costume, the game’s growing roster of unlockables also includes a recreation of Hugh Jackman’s suit from 2025’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ the classic Patch disguise, and additional outfits like Midnight and Future Fugitive that require completing specific in-game challenges to earn.
That mix of easily accessible story-based unlocks and more demanding collectible-hunting suits mirrors the structure Insomniac used successfully across its Spider-Man games, giving completionists plenty of incentive to fully explore Marvel’s Wolverine’s world. Given how much attention the X-Men ’97 suit alone has already generated ahead of release, Insomniac’s costume strategy looks set to be one of the more talked-about elements of the game once it finally launches.

With the review embargo lifting just before release, fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether Insomniac has recaptured the same magic with Wolverine that made its Spider-Man games such consistent hits. Given how the studio handled costume design in its prior titles, expectations are running high that the finished game will offer even more suits than what’s been revealed so far.
The X-Men ’97 suit’s inclusion also speaks to just how much cultural momentum the animated revival has carried since its debut, with the show earning widespread critical acclaim for recapturing the tone and character work of the original 1990s series. Seeing that specific costume make the jump into a major triple-A game underscores how thoroughly it’s resonated with both longtime X-Men fans and newer viewers who discovered the characters through the reboot.
