‘The Diplomat’ Season 4 Trailer Teases the Show’s Most Explosive Chapter Yet

That wait is finally coming to an end. Netflix has confirmed ‘The Diplomat’ will return for its fourth season, picking up directly from the fallout of Season 3’s ending, when Kate Wyler discovered that her husband and the sitting president had secretly conspired to steal a Russian nuclear weapon without informing their British allies.

Rufus Sewell returns as Hal Wyler, now serving as Vice President, while Allison Janney reprises her role as President Grace Penn. The season’s official synopsis makes clear that Penn and Hal’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most dangerous weapon continues escalating, pushing the United States toward the brink of war even as Kate scrambles to contain the personal and political damage left in its wake.
The newly released teaser leans heavily into the emotional stakes between Kate and Hal, opening with Russell’s character making her intentions clear. “I’m not trying to get out of the marriage, I’m trying to get back in,” she says, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage of the trailer’s release, before acknowledging the volatile nature of their relationship. “We do high highs and really low lows. The fights are gonna be spicy.”
Hal’s response carries the weight of a man who’s been burned before, replying simply, “You can’t keep doing this to me.” The trailer later shows the couple exchanging vows in what appears to be a church setting, with Kate pledging to stand by Hal through even worse circumstances than they’ve already endured, only for Hal to respond with visible uncertainty.
Beyond the central trio, Season 4 brings back Bradley Whitford as First Gentleman Todd Penn, along with Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Nana Mensah, and Rory Kinnear rounding out the supporting cast. Series creator Debora Cahn returns as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.
