‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Frank Harkness Really Back?
Few spy dramas manage to be this funny and this bleak in the same breath, and ‘Slow Horses‘ has built its entire identity on that balancing act. Jackson Lamb’s crew of disgraced MI5 rejects have spent five seasons proving that being terrible at your job doesn’t mean you can’t stumble into saving the day, usually while getting insulted along the way.
Season 6 premiered on Apple TV on September 16, and the opening episode, titled “Circle of Life,” wastes no time reminding viewers just how precarious life at Slough House really is. The show picks up with the team still reeling from the fallout of last season’s power shift at Regent’s Park, and things only get messier from there.
The episode opens on Struan Loy, the former Slow Horse so hopeless he was deemed too useless even for Slough House, now teaching karate out of a converted shipping container and dreaming of turning the containers into stackable tiny homes. That business pitch never gets off the ground, because two people posing as investors break his arm, lock him inside, and set the whole thing on fire, kicking off what looks like a season-long conspiracy targeting current and former Slow Horses alike.
The same pair also turn up to warn off Kay White before setting their sights on River Cartwright, giving the premiere its clearest sense of dread. Jackson Lamb only learns about the threat because Emma Flyte loops him in against Diana Taverner’s explicit orders, and it takes him and River barely any time at all to realize Struan’s death was no accident.
Slough House Gets Wiped Off the Books
Complicating matters further, Slough House has been erased from the Park’s official database entirely, meaning nobody on the team is getting paid. Lady Di, now running things as First Desk, even sends an estate agent to assess the building’s value, an intrusion that earns him a keyboard to the face courtesy of JK Coe.
Catherine Standish tries to get answers from Moira at the Park and learns the deletion was deliberate, seemingly ordered from the top. When Jackson later confronts Diana directly, she claims total ignorance, though she is quick to improvise an excuse rather than admit she might not actually be in control of her own department.
That loss of control becomes clearer through her dealings with Peter Judd, who has been shadowing wealthy donors around the Park and pressuring Diana to play nice. The bigger problem surfaces when it becomes clear the money funding her position didn’t actually come from Judd, but from an anonymous third party who may eventually expect something in return, a detail that hints at just how compromised the Service has become.
The Ending Explained: David Cartwright’s Funeral
The heart of the premiere is the off-screen death of River’s grandfather, David Cartwright, and the standard-issue Service funeral the Park throws together for him. It becomes the episode’s emotional and narrative center, pulling nearly every subplot into one location.
It’s at the funeral where Judd tells Diana about the mysterious funding, where Jackson learns of another Slow Horse’s death from Roddy Ho, and where a bitter Lady Di reveals to Catherine that it was Jackson who killed her former boss, Charles Partner. River also delivers a eulogy about his grandfather’s dull career in the Department of Transport, a moment that sends Jackson into fits of laughter despite the somber setting.

The episode’s final gut-punch comes when River spots his estranged father, the dangerous American mercenary Frank Harkness, watching the funeral from a distance. River gives chase, but Harkness slips away before any confrontation, leaving his motives, and his connection to the murders of former Slow Horses, entirely unresolved heading into episode 2.
Between a hidden financier, a vanished assassin father, and a team that has literally ceased to exist on paper, “Circle of Life” sets up one of the more ominous seasons the show has attempted yet.
