‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 Just Pulled Off a Stunning Netflix Comeback
Sophomore slumps have become something of a running theme on Netflix over the past year, with returning hits routinely struggling to match the numbers their debut seasons pulled in. Shows like ‘Wednesday,’ ‘Beef’ and ‘That ’90s Show’ have all seen steep viewership declines in their second outings, and for a while it looked like Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Gentlemen’ was heading down that same path.
When ‘The Gentlemen‘ returned for its second season on September 3, the results were underwhelming by the standard the first season had set. The show debuted at number three on Netflix’s global chart with 6.7 million views and 49.8 million hours watched in its first four days, a steep drop from the 12.2 million views season 1 pulled in during its own debut window back in March 2024.
That opening slump has now turned into a genuine turnaround. According to Variety, ‘The Gentlemen’ season 2 saw its viewership jump 48 percent in its second week on the platform, while season 1, which had already re-entered the charts for a nostalgic rewatch run, also climbed higher in the standings.
That 45 percent decline compared to the first season’s launch had raised real questions about whether the two-and-a-half-year gap between seasons had cost the show too much momentum. Season one’s original run stretched across ten consecutive weeks in Netflix’s global top 10 and racked up more than 72 million completed views over that stretch, giving season two an especially tall bar to clear on its own.
Part of the explanation for the shaky opening appears to be timing rather than quality. Season 2 launched over Labor Day weekend, and while the extra day off seemed like it should have boosted viewing, it may have instead pulled some subscribers toward other holiday plans during the show’s crucial first few days.
The season 1 rewatch effect also played a role early on, with longtime fans returning to catch up on Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass’s story before diving into the new episodes, temporarily splitting attention between the two seasons rather than funneling it all into the new release. Once that catch-up viewing settled, season 2 appears to have picked up real momentum on its own merits.
The show follows Theo James as Eddie Horniman, the 13th Duke of Halstead, alongside Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass, as the pair continue navigating a sprawling criminal cannabis empire one year after joining forces. Critics have responded warmly to the new episodes as well, with the season’s Rotten Tomatoes score climbing into the mid-80s compared to season 1’s 75 percent, even as the show leans into a noticeably darker and bigger tonal shift this time around.

Notably, Netflix greenlit ‘The Gentlemen’ for a third season back in August, roughly ten days before season two even premiered, meaning the decision to continue the show had nothing to do with how these viewership numbers eventually played out. That early renewal now looks like a smart bet given the show’s second-week rebound.

With both seasons climbing the charts simultaneously and the franchise reportedly topping IMDb’s most popular TV shows list following the week two surge, ‘The Gentlemen’ appears to be settling into the kind of sustained, word-of-mouth growth that shows like this one typically need time to build. Whether that momentum holds heading into its next chart week remains the real test.
