The moment comes from a rare, extended on-camera conversation with GQ’s Zach Baron, where Cruise was asked directly about hitting a milestone birthday. “You turned 64 last week. Does that mean anything to you?” Baron asked, and Cruise’s response has since been clipped and shared everywhere for capturing exactly who he is.

Rather than laughing the question off entirely, Cruise leaned into his trademark intensity once he got going. “It means I’m 64,” he said, before pushing back on the idea that the number should change anything about how he sees his life. “I’m an all-in kind of guy… I don’t know what to say. Life, I’m coming right at it. It’s coming at me, and I’m coming right at it. I am not a halfway kind of person,” he told GQ.

He went further, explicitly rejecting the notion that turning 64 signals some kind of career peak or natural stopping point. “I never want to be like: ‘You hit that peak.’ There’s always a new dream,” Cruise added, framing age as something that has nothing to do with slowing down.

It arrives while he’s promoting ‘Digger,’ his first collaboration with filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and by all accounts one of the most transformative roles of his career.

In ‘Digger,’ Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil tycoon billed as the most powerful man in the world, who races to prove he’s humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything. The physical transformation involves a pot belly, thinning combover, prosthetics, and a thick Southern drawl, a look that’s already drawn comparisons to his unrecognizable Les Grossman turn in ‘Tropic Thunder.’

Iñárritu revealed at CinemaCon that he’d been planning the film for around a decade and had been talking to Cruise about it for roughly seven years before production finally began. The two reportedly wanted to work together since the beginning of the century, with Iñárritu reading the script to Cruise aloud over a series of days as part of their collaborative process.

Shot in the UK on VistaVision with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki behind the camera, ‘Digger’ marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since 2015’s ‘The Revenant.’ The film also stars a stacked ensemble including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emma D’Arcy.

Cruise has described the part as pulling from unexpected corners of his four-decade career, everything from ‘Taps’ to ‘Jerry Maguire,’ even as most eyes keep drifting back to that Les Grossman comparison. At a Warner Bros. event unveiling the film’s trailer, Cruise told journalists it felt as though every skill he’d developed across his career had led up to this specific performance, calling the collaboration with Iñárritu something neither of them had ever attempted before.

‘Digger’ hits theaters on October 2, and if this birthday exchange is any indication, Cruise’s press tour for it is shaping up to be just as memorable as the performance itself.
