‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Are Off to a Record-Chasing Start
Marvel has spent the past few years learning that superhero fatigue is a real risk. Between uneven releases and rising costs, the studio badly needs a win that reminds audiences why the Avengers became a cultural event in the first place. That makes the early ticket-buying numbers for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ one of the most closely watched stories of the fall.
The film reunites a giant ensemble under the Russo brothers, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers. Disney did something unusual with its sales plan, putting premium-format tickets on sale on July 20, months earlier than usual, and later expanding to all theaters. The film arrives on Dec. 18, opposite Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three.’
Now the presale totals have jumped again. According to Global Box Office, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has crossed $55M in domestic presales with 3 months to go before launch. The account also listed America’s biggest pre-release sales ever: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at $150M in 2026, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $130M in 2019 and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at $78M in 2021.

The $55M figure follows a report from Deadline last week, when Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said the film’s domestic presales had passed $50M. He shared the milestone at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference. Deadline noted that more than 70% of sales went to Infinity Vision, Disney’s new premium large-format brand.
The start was strong on day one, too. Variety reported that the film generated $16.5M in advance sales on its first day across roughly 1,000 domestic theaters. That was for premium formats only, since ‘Doomsday’ will not play in IMAX in the US for the first 3 weeks because ‘Dune: Part Three’ has exclusivity.
The buzz around the film has been enormous. Deadline reported that the July trailer is the second-biggest trailer launch of all time and Disney’s most-viewed trailer ever. Marvel’s five-hour livestream unveiling the cast drew 275M digital views.
The excitement has spilled over to streaming. Marvel titles recorded more than 420M hours on Disney+ in August, a jump of over 200M hours that Disney linked to anticipation for the film. The re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ called ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ arrives on Sept. 25, and its trailer drew 77M views in 24 hours.
The comparison list from Global Box Office puts the current total in context. ‘Doomsday’ still has a long way to go to catch ‘Brand New Day,’ which reportedly reached $150M in advance sales by the Thursday before its opening, according to EntTelligence data cited by Deadline. That film went on to open with a record $360M domestically.
Even so, the early pace looks ahead of the last Spider-Man film. One report noted that ‘Brand New Day’ did not cross $40M in presales until about 40 days before release, while ‘Doomsday’ passed that level with roughly 100 days to go. That comparison comes from a single outlet, so it is worth treating with some caution.

Tracking suggests ‘Doomsday’ could open big. Global Box Office has projected an opening between $260M and $300M domestically, compared with the $357.1M of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and the $360M of ‘Brand New Day.’ Some insiders have speculated about even bigger numbers, though those are estimates and not confirmed.
There are reasons for caution. Analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted that presales and previews are a strong indicator but can be front-loaded by fans who want to see a film right away. Early sales also come from the most devoted fans, so word of mouth and reviews will matter for the film’s legs.
The shared release date with ‘Dune: Part Three’ adds another layer. Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet joked about the pairing and coined the nickname ‘Dunesday.’ Some presale trackers say the December weekend could become the most pre-sold in box office history, with ‘Dune: Part Three’ also drawing strong early numbers.
Premium screens are shaping up as the key battleground, with Disney relying on Infinity Vision, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX and other large formats. Exhibitors have reportedly been adding showtimes to meet demand. For theaters, that is a very welcome problem heading into the holiday season.
The next few months will show whether the early excitement can carry into a huge opening. For now, the presale total suggests fans are eager for the next Avengers team-up.
How high do you think Avengers: Doomsday can go on opening weekend?
