‘Alpha Gang’ Star Chris Pine Is Rumored to Be DCU’s Batman in the Upcoming Project
DC Studios has spent the past couple of years carefully building out its slate under James Gunn and Peter Safran, mixing live-action tentpoles with a handful of more experimental projects designed to expand the universe in unexpected directions. Among the most intriguing of those has been ‘Dynamic Duo,’ the studio’s first fully animated theatrical feature, which has remained something of a mystery since it was first announced.
Details about the film’s unique visual style have trickled out over time, but almost nothing had been revealed about who would actually be voicing its characters. That’s finally starting to change, and the reveal has sent fans into a frenzy across social media.
According to a new report, Chris Pine has reportedly been offered the role of Batman for ‘Dynamic Duo,’ though nothing about the casting has been finalized just yet. Mason Thames is said to be attached to voice Dick Grayson’s Robin, while Lee Pace is reportedly on board as the leader of the villainous Red Hood gang.
It’s worth noting that Pine isn’t currently in talks for the role, and other names are reportedly still being considered for the part. Still, the mere possibility of Pine stepping into the cowl, even in an animated capacity, has been enough to dominate DC fan conversations since the news broke.
‘Dynamic Duo’ centers on the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the first two characters to take up the Robin mantle alongside Batman. The film follows the two as childhood friends who eventually diverge, with Dick becoming Batman’s protege while Jason falls in with the Joker’s gang.
Importantly, the project exists entirely outside Gunn’s mainline DC Universe continuity that includes ‘Superman’ and the upcoming ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold.’ It’s being treated as its own standalone Elseworlds-style story, similar in spirit to Matt Reeves’ separate Batman universe centered on Robert Pattinson.
That distinction matters for fans wondering whether this casting has any bearing on who might eventually play Batman in live action within the DCU proper. Since ‘Dynamic Duo’ operates independently of that timeline, Pine landing the role wouldn’t preclude Gunn from casting an entirely different actor for Batman’s eventual live-action debut.
Pine wouldn’t be a complete stranger to the DC universe if he takes on the role. The actor previously played Steve Trevor across the ‘Wonder Woman’ films in the DCEU, giving him prior experience within the broader DC film landscape, albeit under a different creative regime.
Voicing Batman would mark a new kind of challenge for Pine, who has built a career largely on live-action work in franchises like ‘Star Trek.’ Given the animated nature of ‘Dynamic Duo’ and its separation from the main DCU timeline, it’s likely any involvement from Pine would be treated as a one-off performance rather than an ongoing commitment to the character.
Beyond Pine and Thames, the reported cast for ‘Dynamic Duo’ continues to take shape. Logan Kim is said to be lined up to voice Jason Todd, while Marsai Martin has reportedly been attached to voice Barbara Gordon.
The film is directed by Arthur Mintz and will utilize what’s being called “Momo animation,” a blend of stop-motion animation, CGI, and live-action performance techniques handled by the animation studio Swaybox. Gunn and Safran are producing alongside Swaybox’s Theresa Andersson, with Matt Reeves also attached as a producer on the project.

Until DC Studios comments directly, all of these castings, including Pine’s potential involvement, remain unverified rumors rather than locked deals.

The film’s ambitious visual approach combined with this kind of star-studded voice cast speculation has positioned it as one of the more unexpectedly buzzy DC projects on the horizon.
