‘Neagley’ Just Did the Unthinkable and Dethroned ‘Reacher’ on Prime Video’s Charts

Prime Video has spent the past several years quietly building one of streaming’s most reliable action franchises, anchored almost entirely by Alan Ritchson’s take on Lee Child’s beloved literary hero. What started as a straightforward adaptation has since grown into something much bigger, with the streamer clearly betting on expanding the world well beyond its original lead character.

That expansion reached a major milestone this past week, following the simultaneous conclusion of one series and the full-season debut of another. Fans finishing up the latest installment of the franchise’s flagship show barely had time to catch their breath before Amazon handed them something new to binge.

‘Reacher‘ Season 4 wrapped its run the same day ‘Neagley,’ the franchise’s first-ever spin-off, dropped all eight episodes at once. Within days, the two shows found themselves sitting at the top of Prime Video’s charts together, and ‘Neagley’ has now officially overtaken ‘Reacher’ for the number one spot on the platform.

According to FlixPatrol’s global rankings, ‘Neagley’ has claimed the top position following its September 16 premiere, with ‘Reacher’ sliding into the number two spot shortly after. On Prime Video’s U.S. Top 10 list specifically, ‘Neagley’ ranked first as of September 20, with ‘Reacher’ following close behind in second place.

‘Neagley’ follows Maria Sten reprising her role as Frances Neagley, a former member of the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit and one of Jack Reacher’s closest allies from the original series. In the spin-off, Neagley works as a private investigator based in Chicago, where she’s pulled into a dangerous conspiracy after the suspicious death of an old friend.

Unlike ‘Reacher,’ which follows its title character drifting from one location to the next, ‘Neagley’ roots itself in a single, recurring setting, giving the show a different rhythm and structure from its parent series. Ritchson himself makes a guest appearance as Jack Reacher within the spin-off, providing a direct connective thread between the two shows without pulling focus away from Sten’s character.

The series was created by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, and its release strategy clearly played a role in its quick climb up the charts. Rather than rolling out weekly episodes like ‘Reacher’ has traditionally done, ‘Neagley’ arrived with its entire eight-episode season available to stream immediately, giving fans the option to binge the whole story right away.

Beyond the streaming numbers, ‘Neagley’ has also managed to hold its own critically against its more established predecessor. The spin-off currently sits at a 92% to 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes depending on the source tracking it, compared to ‘Reacher’ Season 4’s score in the mid-90s range, putting the two shows remarkably close in overall critical reception.

Audience scores have followed a similar pattern, with ‘Neagley’ pulling in positive reactions from fans who’ve praised Sten’s performance and the show’s slightly more grounded, character-focused tone compared to the bigger, punchier style of its parent series. That reception has quickly positioned Neagley as more than just a footnote spin-off riding on its predecessor’s coattails.

‘Reacher’ Season 5 has already been confirmed, ensuring Ritchson’s version of the character will continue well into the future. While ‘Neagley’ hasn’t received an official renewal for a second season just yet, Wootton has indicated that the creative team already has future storylines mapped out and ready to go.

Given how strongly the spin-off has performed both critically and in the streaming charts during its opening weeks, a renewal seems like a formality more than a genuine question mark. With Prime Video clearly willing to invest in expanding this world beyond its original central character, ‘Neagley’ overtaking ‘Reacher’ may end up being remembered as the moment the franchise officially became a full-fledged universe.
