Florence Pugh Stuns at ‘East of Eden’ Screening Ahead of Its Highly Anticipated Netflix Premiere

Literary adaptations carry a certain kind of pressure, but few come with as much built-in weight as Netflix’s upcoming take on John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden.‘ The classic 1952 novel has already been immortalized once on screen through Elia Kazan’s celebrated 1955 film, and now his granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, is stepping in to reimagine the multigenerational saga for a new generation.

That family connection has added an extra layer of significance to the project’s promotional rollout, giving audiences a chance to see how this new version measures up to her grandfather’s legacy once it finally arrives. After years in development, the series is now entering its final promotional stretch ahead of its debut.

Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan turned heads at an advance screening for ‘East of Eden’ in West Hollywood this past week, posing together for photos ahead of the series’ October 1 premiere on Netflix. Pugh wore a Rodarte embroidered yellow tulle ensemble paired with Bvlgari jewelry for the special screening and conversation event, held at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills.

Kazan, who serves as the series’ co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer, joined Pugh at the event as the two continued their promotional tour for the project. The screening marked one of the first major public moments tied to a series that’s reportedly been in development since 2020.

‘East of Eden’ reimagines Steinbeck’s sprawling family saga through the perspective of Cathy Ames, played by Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer on the seven-episode limited series. The story follows the Trask family across generations, exploring themes of free will and the choice between good and evil that made the original novel a landmark of American literature.

The cast surrounding Pugh includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as his half-brother Charles Trask, alongside Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, and Martha Plimpton rounding out the ensemble. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders also star as Caleb and Aron Trask, the twin sons at the center of much of the story’s generational conflict.

Kazan has spoken highly of Pugh’s involvement in bringing Cathy Ames to life, describing her casting as an easy decision from the start. “I didn’t have a backup. I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy,” Kazan said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum.

Kazan didn’t stop there, further praising Pugh’s instincts and command of the camera throughout the five-month shoot. “Her awareness of the camera is unparalleled. I don’t use this word lightly: I think she’s a genius. I watched her on set for five months. I have no more insight now as to how she works than I did before,” Kazan added in the same interview.

That kind of praise from a showrunner with such a personal connection to the source material speaks volumes about the trust placed in Pugh’s performance. Given her growing list of acclaimed roles, expectations for her turn as Cathy Ames are already running high heading into the show’s release.

‘East of Eden’ was filmed in New Zealand and is set to premiere on Netflix on Thursday, October 1. With its prestigious literary source material, star-studded cast, and Kazan’s personal ties to the story’s screen history, the series is positioned as one of the streamer’s more significant awards-season contenders heading into the fall.

Given the scale of the project and the buzz already building around Pugh’s performance, ‘East of Eden’ looks poised to be one of the more talked-about limited series of the season.
