According to Kimmel, McConaughey immediately noticed something was wrong. “He sees that I’m upset and he’s like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ And I told him what happened and he is again at the urinal, and he turns to me and he gives me a very nice hug,” Kimmel recalled in an interview with Variety after the incident.

As if the moment wasn’t already unusual enough, Woody Harrelson happened to emerge from a nearby bathroom stall right in the middle of the exchange, witnessing the entire encounter firsthand. Rather than reacting with shock, Harrelson took the situation in stride, later offering his own lighthearted take on stumbling into the scene.

“I never try to grade or critique what other people are doing, and I figured you guys, whatever your thing is, I didn’t want to be the guy to say, ‘No, not in the restroom at the Emmys!'” Harrelson said, reflecting on his decision to simply let the moment play out. He added that once he heard Kimmel explain what had upset him, the group ended up sharing another hug together out in the hallway afterward.

Despite the absurdity of the situation, Kimmel made clear the encounter genuinely helped him process his grief in the moment. “That did lighten the moment considerably and Cleto would have loved that very much,” Kimmel said, framing the bizarre hug as an unexpectedly fitting tribute to his late friend’s sense of humor.
