Emma D’Arcy Joins Tom Cruise at the Star-Studded World Premiere of ‘Digger’ in London

Tom Cruise has spent decades cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men, but his newest project marks a genuine departure from the high-octane spectacle audiences have come to expect from him. Teaming up with an acclaimed filmmaker known for a very different kind of storytelling has already made this collaboration one of the year’s most closely watched.

That anticipation reached a new peak this week, as the film finally made its way in front of audiences for the first time. After months of buildup and a noticeably guarded approach to the festival circuit, the project’s premiere became an event in its own right.

Emma D’Arcy was among the ensemble cast photographed at the world premiere of ‘Digger‘ in London, joining Cruise and the rest of the film’s starry lineup as Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s satire officially debuted on September 22. The screening took place as a Royal Film Performance in Leicester Square, staged by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures in aid of the Film and TV Charity.

‘Digger’ marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since his Oscar-winning 2015 feature ‘The Revenant,’ and finds Cruise stepping into a role unlike anything he’s taken on in recent memory. Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described in the film’s official logline as “the most powerful man in the world,” who embarks on a frantic mission to prove himself as humanity’s savior before the very disaster he unleashed destroys everything.

The film has been billed as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” blending sharp satire with the kind of ensemble dramatic weight Iñárritu has built his career on. Cruise reportedly transforms significantly for the role, taking on a thick Southern accent alongside noticeably altered physical features for the part.

D’Arcy joins a lineup that includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde, giving the film a level of dramatic firepower unusual for something marketed primarily as a comedy. That combination of comedic premise and heavyweight ensemble casting has fueled much of the buzz surrounding the project since it was first announced.

Iñárritu directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, reuniting with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who shot the film on 35mm using VistaVision. Filming took place in and around the UK’s Pinewood Studios over roughly six months, giving the London premiere added significance as a homecoming of sorts for the production.

Speaking at CinemaCon earlier this year, Iñárritu reflected on just how long this collaboration had been in the works. “I started having the idea for this film nine years ago, and two years after that Tom and I started talking about the possibility of him becoming Digger Rockwell,” Iñárritu said, according to Gold Derby. “We know he is fearless, but embodying this character is another kind of fearless.”

That description captures much of what’s made the pairing so intriguing to industry observers, given how far outside his usual wheelhouse this role appears to push Cruise. With Iñárritu’s history of turning spectacle into pointed commentary, expectations for how the two collaborators’ sensibilities would mesh have only grown since the project’s initial announcement.

Following its London premiere, ‘Digger’ is set to roll out internationally starting September 30, before reaching North American theaters and IMAX screens on October 2. The film marks Cruise’s first project since signing a deal to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery, adding another layer of significance to how the film performs once wide release begins.

Given the strength of its ensemble and Iñárritu’s track record with awards-caliber filmmaking, ‘Digger’ looks positioned to be one of the more closely watched releases of the fall season.
