‘Darkwing Duck’ Reboot Officially Ordered at Disney+ With an Incredible All-Star Voice Cast
Disney+ has spent years steadily reviving beloved animated properties from its extensive library, giving classic characters new life for both nostalgic longtime fans and entirely new generations of viewers. That strategy has produced some genuine hits, but few revivals have generated quite as much excitement as the one just confirmed.
Rumors and development chatter around this particular project have circulated for nearly six years, with fans wondering whether the beloved crime-fighting duck would ever officially make his way back to screens. That long wait has finally come to an end with real confirmation and a genuinely stacked cast attached.
Disney+ has officially ordered a ‘Darkwing Duck‘ reboot to series, announcing a voice cast led by Mark Hamill in the title role alongside Seth Rogen, Lizzy Caplan, and Lilimar. Hamill takes over as Drake Mallard, also known as Darkwing Duck, stepping into a role originally voiced by Jim Cummings across the character’s original 1991 run.
According to the official logline, the series finds Darkwing Duck trapped for 35 years in an alternate world that’s never heard of his heroic exploits. A rebellious teen named Duckie, who knows all about his past as a hero, arrives to pull the ego-driven vigilante back into action, teaming up with him to battle old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt while reuniting with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana to save the universe.
Rogen voices Launchpad McQuack in the new series, while Caplan takes on the role of Darkwing’s adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Lilimar rounds out the core cast as Duckie, the newcomer whose arrival kicks off the show’s central storyline.
The series has assembled an impressively deep supporting cast beyond its central trio. Dan Stevens voices Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis takes on Rosa, and Kathryn Newton voices Firecracker, joined by Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
The series hails from executive producers Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui, with Rogen producing through his Point Grey Pictures banner alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham. Original creator Tad Stones consulted on the new series’ development, giving the project a direct link back to the character’s original creative roots.
Stones expressed genuine enthusiasm about seeing his creation return to screens after more than three decades. “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said, according to Variety.
The Point Grey team echoed that excitement in a joint statement addressing Disney’s decision to bring the character back. “Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous and we said ‘hell yeah,'” the Point Grey team said, capturing the playful energy that’s defined much of the marketing around the announcement so far.
The original ‘Darkwing Duck’ ran for three seasons and 91 episodes between 1991 and 1992, airing as part of the syndicated Disney Afternoon programming block and on Saturday mornings on ABC. The series became known for its comedic take on the superhero genre and earned significant critical acclaim during its original run, cementing Darkwing as one of the more beloved characters in Disney’s animated catalog.
The character has also maintained connections to Disney’s broader animated universe over the years, with Launchpad previously appearing in both the original ‘DuckTales’ and its recent reboot, alongside appearances from Darkwing and Gosalyn in that same rebooted series. That shared continuity has kept the character present in Disney’s animated landscape even without a solo series of his own until now.
This latest announcement follows Variety’s initial report back in 2020 that a Darkwing Duck revival was already in development at Disney+, making this official series order the culmination of a lengthy development process. With such a stacked voice cast now confirmed, anticipation for the project’s eventual premiere is already running high among longtime fans of the original show.
Given the strength of this voice cast and the character’s enduring legacy, this ‘Darkwing Duck’ revival looks positioned to be one of Disney+’s more exciting animated additions.
