‘Last Seen’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: A Shocking Confession Confirms Ian’s Worst Suspicions
Apple TV’s newest mystery thriller has been quietly building tension since its premiere, and it finally cashed in that tension with a gut punch of an episode. ‘Last Seen‘ follows Ian Ridley, a former police detective turned police dispatcher whose life fractured 11 years ago when his young daughter Maggie vanished without explanation. When Ian receives a distress call from a teenage girl he becomes convinced is Maggie, he throws himself back into a search he never truly abandoned.
The show has spent its first three episodes slowly tightening the screws, with Ian’s obsession pulling him into conflict with the people closest to him, including his old friend and AA sponsor, Donald. Episode 4, titled “The Truth,” picks up right where that tension left off, and the title turns out to be a promise the show actually keeps.
The episode opens with fallout from Ian’s accident, as he tells Detective Pena that Henry, Donald’s brother, deliberately ran him off the road. That accusation is enough to put both Henry and Donald squarely in the sights of the police, and from there, the episode never really slows down.
Donald, wracked with guilt, calls Henry and warns him that Ian has figured out the truth and that police involvement is only a matter of time. Henry begs him to stay quiet a little longer, and despite everything, Donald agrees to protect his brother one more time. Henry then shows up at the police station himself, offering the officers a very different version of events than the one Ian has been piecing together.
Back on Ian’s end, Donald still refuses to talk to him directly, but he opens up to Jenna Reid, Henry’s wife, who arrives wanting to “tell him what really happened.” The show keeps that conversation off-screen, letting the mystery breathe just a little longer. Donald does reveal one crucial detail, though: he’s worried Henry is planning to take Sarah, the girl Ian believes is Maggie, to the property of the brothers’ fanatical father, a man who reportedly ruined their lives growing up.
Elsewhere, Debbie, still reeling from her own struggles, has a tense run-in with Jenna that ends up lending real weight to Ian’s theory. Armed with that new confirmation, Ian convinces Bill to accompany him out to the family’s farm, setting up the episode’s climactic final act. When they arrive, they find Henry in the middle of trying to force Sarah and Jenna into a car, with Jenna pushing back that Sarah deserves an actual choice in what happens next.
Henry, described by critics as a gaslighting coward rather than a sympathetic figure, refuses to let Sarah decide anything for herself. He warns Ian to leave the property and stay away from his daughter, but Jennifer has clearly had enough of the lie. In the episode’s final, devastating beat, Jennifer says out loud, in front of everyone, that Sarah is not actually their daughter.
That confession is the confirmation both Ian and Bill needed, but there’s no time to celebrate it. Henry opens fire before anyone can act, shooting Bill and striking Jennifer as well. Ian manages to take cover, but he cannot stop Henry from getting his family away from the farm; a leaking fuel tank forces the group to flee in Jennifer’s car instead of the van Henry originally planned to use.

By the time the smoke clears, Ian is injured, and Bill appears to be dead, a loss that promises to hit Debbie especially hard given everything else she has been carrying this season. The episode’s final moments suggest Henry is heading toward his father’s compound, the same fanatical figure Donald warned about earlier, setting up a dangerous final stretch as ‘Last Seen’ heads into its last two episodes.
With only two chapters left in this six-episode season, the show has moved from slow-burn mystery to full-blown crisis mode almost overnight. Sarah’s identity is no longer in question, but her safety very much is, and Henry’s next move could determine whether Ian finally gets his daughter back or loses her again for good.
