The Scorsese, DiCaprio, De Niro and Day-Lewis Reunion Is the Photo Cinephiles Never Thought They’d Get
Some cinematic family trees are so tangled that a single group photo can feel like a movie event. The Scorsese, DiCaprio, De Niro and Day-Lewis reunion touches nearly every era of the director’s career, from his 1970s breakthroughs to his modern epics. Each name on that list represents a chapter in American filmmaking.
Robert De Niro has made 10 features with Scorsese, running from ‘Mean Streets’ to ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, while Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in six. Daniel Day-Lewis stands slightly apart, having worked with the director just twice, on ‘The Age of Innocence’ and ‘Gangs of New York’. That 2002 epic is the only film that brought three of these four together.
The connections are almost as dramatic as the movies. Scorsese has said De Niro urged him to meet DiCaprio after working with him on ‘This Boy’s Life’, which helped launch their partnership on ‘Gangs of New York’. De Niro had once been in line to play Bill the Butcher, the role that ultimately went to Day-Lewis.
Day-Lewis retired from acting in 2017, which made the rare glimpses of him with Scorsese all the more precious. At the National Board of Review gala in January 2024, he made a surprise appearance to present Scorsese with the Best Director award. Scorsese used his speech to tease that there might be time for one more film together, and fans have been dreaming ever since.

That history is why a short video posted Wednesday by Film Updates on X landed so hard. The 19-second clip, captioned “Last night in New York,” shows Scorsese smiling at the center of the frame, with DiCaprio waving on one side and De Niro peering over his shoulder. The post says Day-Lewis is part of the group as well, though the reports on the ceremony I found do not mention him, so his presence rests on that caption.
The occasion appears to be a celebration of the director and De Niro. According to franceinfo, French President Emmanuel Macron decorated Scorsese and De Niro on Tuesday evening at the Villa Albertine, the French cultural residence in Manhattan. DiCaprio was among the guests.
Scorsese, 83, received the insignia of Grand Officier of the Legion of Honour, recognizing decades spent restoring film heritage and supporting independent cinemas. De Niro, also 83, was named an Officier of the Legion of Honour for his work in film education and independent audiovisual creation. Macron was in New York for the UN General Assembly, and the ceremony fit into that trip.
The honor also connects to a bigger conversation about the future of the medium. Macron hosted the Lumière summit on Sept. 7 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence to support cinema at a time when it faces pressure from AI and streaming platforms, and Scorsese wrote ahead of the meeting that it was the worldwide discussion everyone needs. Seeing him honored in New York only weeks later feels like a natural continuation.
The possible presence of Day-Lewis is what turns a ceremony into a moment. He returned to acting last year for ‘Anemone’, directed by his son Ronan, after an 8-year break, and it premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2025. He also told Empire that he would not shy away from further work, which has kept hope alive that another Scorsese collaboration could happen.
Nothing has been announced, and it would be unwise to read too much into a friendly photo. Still, Scorsese’s earlier teasing, Day-Lewis’s comeback and this New York gathering make a tempting trail for cinephiles to follow. Even without a project attached, the image itself is a small piece of film history.
It is also a reminder of how personal Scorsese’s career has been. The people around him in that clip are not just collaborators but friends who helped define his best-known films. Whether it leads to a fifth or sixth chapter of that story or simply stands as a lovely night out, it is easy to see why fans grabbed onto it.
