‘Digger’ Star Tom Cruise Wants to Make a Movie With Taylor Swift, and He Thinks She Should Direct It

Tom Cruise and Taylor Swift have been hard to miss together lately. Cruise was among the guests at Swift’s July 3 wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden, an event officiated by fellow film star Adam Sandler. Then, on September 14, he was spotted alongside her in her private suite at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos.

The friendship was clearly a hit with Cruise. When he appeared on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ on September 17, he joked that Swift had schooled him on football during the game. He also called her a genius he has followed since she was a kid, and he shared more about the outing on Travis Kelce’s ‘New Heights’ podcast on September 18.

Now the actor has gone further than friendly praise. Speaking to BuzzFeed UK at the London premiere of his new film ‘Digger’ on September 22, Cruise said he would happily make a movie with Swift and suggested she could direct feature films if she ever chose to.

The comment started with a simple question about whether he would star in a Swift music video. Cruise sidestepped it with a pivot back to his own turf, saying he makes movies and that the two should make one together. He stopped short of confirming any project, but he made clear how much he admires her talents, calling her brilliant and a brilliant writer.

He then pointed to her work behind the camera. Cruise noted that Swift already directs her own videos and does a beautiful job, and he added that working with her on anything would be amazing. The remarks landed on the same day Swift announced her new single, ‘Patient Zero,’ which arrives this Friday.

Cruise isn’t exaggerating about her track record. Swift has directed more than 15 music videos and picked up 4 Best Director wins along the way. In 2021, she made her filmmaking leap with ‘All Too Well: The Short Film,’ starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, which screened at the Tribeca and Toronto film festivals and received a limited theatrical release.

A feature has long been rumored. In late 2022, it was announced that she would make her feature directorial debut for Searchlight Pictures, though her record-breaking Eras Tour appears to have pushed that back. Since then, she directed ‘Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,’ an 89-minute film that arrived alongside her album in October 2025 and earned $50.1 million at the box office.

Timing makes the story even more fun. Swift is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honours at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, an award that recognizes exactly the kind of directing career Cruise was praising.

Cruise, meanwhile, is promoting ‘Digger,’ the film from director Alejandro González Iñárritu that arrives on October 2. During his Fallon appearance, he was asked about rumors that ‘Digger’ was secretly a musical. He laughed that it wasn’t, but said it sounded like a very good idea.
