‘The Love Hypothesis’ Star Lili Reinhart Turns Up the Heat in Stunning New Interview Magazine Shoot
Every few years, someone declares the romantic comedy dead, and every few years, someone tries to bring it back. Lili Reinhart is the latest to take up the cause, and her new Interview Magazine feature is a stylish reminder of just how seriously she’s taking the mission.
The reason is ‘The Love Hypothesis,’ the Prime Video adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 novel. Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate who ends up in a fake relationship with an intimidating professor, Dr. Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman. She’s also an executive producer, and the film debuted on Prime Video on September 23.
That same day, Reinhart was photographed by Taryn Segal for Interview Magazine. The shoot was set in a wood-paneled hotel room, with Reinhart posing in black outfits, kneeling on the floor next to her heels, and holding a black lace mask.

The feature pairs the photos with a conversation between Reinhart and Grammy-winning singer Laufey, who conducted the interview. It was a first meeting for the pair, although Laufey turned out to be a longtime ‘Riverdale’ fan. She shared that she used to wake up at 6 AM in Iceland to watch new episodes with her twin sister before school.
The chat took place on September 15 in New York, as Reinhart began the final leg of her press tour. Much of it focused on her press-tour wardrobe, which turned out to be a deliberate tribute to romantic comedies. She explained that she and her stylist had to assemble around 30 looks, and their inspiration board evolved into homages to leading ladies from 1990s and 2000s rom-coms.

The choice of vintage clothing was meant to give ‘The Love Hypothesis’ the feel of an early-2000s movie rather than something stamped with a modern date. As Reinhart said in her conversation with Interview Magazine, “they just don’t make them like they used to.” Laufey noticed the theme immediately and singled out a green dress inspired by ‘Atonement,’ and Reinhart said she had roughly 8 more looks to go.

Reinhart also explained why she said yes to the project. She read the book while in Venice for a festival and fell for its slow burn, and she said she understood why readers love Olive. She related to the character’s small circle of friends, and she accepts that some fans will always compare her to their own version of Olive.
The casting of Bateman came down to a Zoom chemistry read. According to Reinhart, they improvised and traded banter during the audition, and Bateman brought real emotion to a scene in which Adam opens up about his past. She said that convinced her he was right for a man with a hardened exterior and a softer core, a classic grumpy-sunshine pairing.
Another fun tidbit from the chat: Reinhart noted that during the run of ‘Riverdale,’ the show’s audience skewed toward people in their 50s. That’s a surprising detail for a series that became a teen-drama phenomenon.
The experience seems to have given Reinhart a taste for romance. She said she loves a Mr. Darcy-style slow burn and would like to do more romantic projects. She also has a dream of appearing in a period piece, citing ‘Marie Antoinette,’ ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Atonement’ as favorites.
For her current project, the early reactions are encouraging. RogerEbert.com called the film a charming rom-com that benefits from the chemistry of its leads, and Collider described it as a near-perfect rom-com experiment. India TV was more measured with a 3 out of 5 rating, saying the film doesn’t change the genre but delivers the comforts audiences expect.
