‘Black Panther’ Star Angela Bassett (68) Brings Marie Laveau Back to the ‘American Horror Story’ Premiere Red Carpet

Few TV franchises have lasted as long as ‘American Horror Story‘ by reinventing themselves every year. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology debuted 15 years ago with its Murder House season, then moved through asylums, covens, freak shows and hotels. Every so often, though, the series looks backward, and this year it’s doing so in a big way.

The 13th season, simply titled ’13,’ is being positioned as a greatest-hits installment. It brings back an army of veterans, including Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts and Kathy Bates. Lange’s return is a genuine surprise, as she had previously said she wouldn’t come back.

The cast turned out in force on Wednesday, September 23, for FX’s premiere celebration at Hotel Chelsea in New York City. Angela Bassett was among those who walked the red carpet, and Film Updates shared photos of her at the event. In the images, she wears a black gown with a dramatic sculptural bodice and carries a skull-embellished clutch.

Bassett’s return carries real weight for longtime fans. She plays Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen she first brought to life in 2013’s ‘Coven,’ and the character is one of the roles most closely tied to her ‘American Horror Story’ legacy. She also appeared in 2014’s ‘Freak Show.’

Her last stint on the series was the eighth season in 2018, alongside Bates and Gabourey Sidibe. Now all 3 are back for the new installment. The trailer, which dropped on September 10, shows Bassett as Marie Laveau alongside Lange as Constance Langdon, Paulson as Cordelia Goode and Peters as Kai Anderson.

The New York event was a star-studded gathering. Lange, Paulson, Peters and Bassett joined Murphy at the party, with fellow cast members Paul Anthony Kelly, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer also in attendance. Others photographed at the event included Leslie Grossman, Mena Suvari and Joey Pollari.

The cast list is packed with characters from across the show’s history. Emma Roberts is back as Madison Montgomery, John Carroll Lynch returns as Twisty the Clown, and Suvari plays the Black Dahlia. The series also brings in new faces, including Kelly, Pollari, Alex Consani and filmmaker John Waters.

Murphy has been clear that ’13’ isn’t just a ‘Coven’ reboot. He has said that people assume it’s a ‘Coven’ season, but it draws on all of the show’s seasons, and he compares it to ‘The Avengers,’ with characters uniting to defeat the ultimate evil. That framing suggests a bigger, more playful tone than a typical season.

The format is also new. This is the first ‘American Horror Story’ season to feature half-hour episodes rather than hour-long ones, and it runs for a series-high 13 episodes. The new showrunners are Ned Martel and Charlie Carver, both of whom previously worked as producers and writers on the show.

‘American Horror Story: 13’ premieres on Thursday, September 24, at 9 p.m. ET on FX, with episodes streaming on Hulu. The first 3 episodes arrive on premiere night, followed by 3 more the next week. After that, 2 episodes will be released each Thursday, leading to the 13th and final episode on October 29.
