Terry Crews Thinks the ‘White Chicks’ Sequel Is Finally Happening, and He’s Waiting by the Phone

Critics tore ‘White Chicks’ apart when it hit theaters in 2004, but audiences had other ideas. The Wayans brothers’ comedy about 2 FBI agents who disguise themselves as heiresses turned into a cult classic, grossing $113.1 million worldwide against a $37 million budget. Two decades later, fans still quote it constantly and keep asking whether a ‘White Chicks’ sequel will ever happen.

Terry Crews knows that appetite better than anyone. His lovestruck Latrell Spencer became one of the film’s most memorable characters, thanks in large part to his singalong to ‘A Thousand Miles.’ He has also been one of the loudest voices pushing for another round.

That enthusiasm has occasionally run ahead of reality. In 2019, Crews told a caller on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ that Shawn Wayans had said they were getting a sequel going, only for Marlon Wayans to post days later that no deal was actually in place. Now Crews says the situation has changed, and he told The Jennifer Hudson Show that he is ready for when the Wayans call.

Crews’s reasoning is simple. The brothers had tied the fate of ‘White Chicks 2’ to the performance of ‘Scary Movie,’ and he says the film delivered. In his view, that clears the way for the sequel.

The numbers back him up. ‘Scary Movie’ opened on June 5 to a franchise-best $55 million domestically, on a reported $30 million budget. It has since grossed $231.9 million worldwide, a strong showing for a film that reviewers didn’t love, with a 24% critic score and a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of mid-June.

The brothers were open about the deal. In February, Marlon said on the ‘Rap Attack’ podcast that a strong ‘Scary Movie’ run would bring them back next with ‘White Chicks 2.’ In April, Marlon and Shawn told Entertainment Tonight that a sequel could happen if the new movie succeeded.

The new movie also marked a homecoming. It was the first time Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans had worked on the franchise together in 18 years, and it brought back Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Michael Tiddes directed, and Paramount handled the release.

Despite the optimism, nothing has been formally announced. Marlon told Variety in June that the sequel was still in discussion, and he floated a few wild ideas, including a possible Mar-a-Lago setting and a holiday-themed installment. The Wayans camp hasn’t officially announced a green light.

That leaves a gap between Crews’s confidence and the official record. It’s a familiar position for the actor, who has been down this road before. Still, the brothers have been consistently enthusiastic since ‘Scary Movie’ opened, and the box office success gives them a strong argument.

There are also cultural questions hanging over any follow-up. Some commentators have argued it would be difficult to greenlight a whiteface comedy today, and others say the Wayans have aged too much to play young socialites again. Those debates are likely to follow any announcement.

Crews, meanwhile, doesn’t seem worried. He has long joked about staying in shape in hopes that the sequel would finally happen, and his latest appearance shows his patience hasn’t worn thin.
