‘Average Joe’ Season 2 Episode 7 Recap and Ending Explained: Joe Finally Meets Teddy in the Castle Basement
Few dark comedies balance bloody chaos and family baggage as well as ‘Average Joe‘, and its Paramount+ second season has spent weeks building toward one specific showdown. Teddy Washington’s name has hung over the series since the pilot. This recap and ending explainer breaks down what finally happens when Joe meets his father face to face.
The setup goes back to the first season, which followed Pittsburgh plumber Joe Washington after his father’s death exposed a double life as a courier for the Russian mob. Teddy had also stolen $10 million and a rare Lamborghini from the syndicate’s boss. This season, Joe enlists his friends Leon, Cathy and Touch to follow a threat targeting his family to Cape Town, South Africa, where a young woman named Imani claims to be Teddy’s daughter and says he is still alive.
That build-up pays off in Season 2 Episode 7, “Simple Pleasure,” which arrived September 23 as the penultimate episode of the eight-episode run. Joe finally sees Teddy in person, and TV Fanatic’s review describes the meeting as steeped in anger, resentment and decades of emotional neglect, set in a prison in a castle basement.
Joe is a shell of himself across from his father, showing real warmth only when the conversation turns to his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. Teddy, meanwhile, comes across within minutes as a man who always has something better to do. The two even trade Kenny Pickett talk, treating the quarterback like a would-be Steelers savior.
The reunion soon turns ugly. Teddy tries hard to get under Joe’s skin, insinuating that the two of them are the same kind of man, and Joe eventually unleashes years of frustration in a fistfight. The reviewer notes the scuffle was a little ludicrous when they should have been plotting an escape, but also long overdue.
Fans hoping for answers get them, in a sense. Teddy walks through his entire plan, and the reviewer calls the delivery an info dump that felt anticlimactic but was creepy in how detached he sounded about the carnage he caused.
The hardest part to hear is how Teddy talks about Imani and her mother, who was shot dead earlier in the season. Imani believed she had a loving bond with her father, while Joe endured a cold one, and the contrast is heartbreaking. Joe may have been the son Teddy loved, at least a tiny bit, in his own twisted way.
While Joe faces his reckoning downstairs, Touch and Leon team up to break into Sipho’s heavily fortified castle without being noticed. Their easy chemistry and comic timing keep the tension from tipping into pure gloom, which has long been the show’s trademark.
Leon then finds Cathy trapped in a tower, an outcome the reviewer saw coming. What she didn’t see coming was a quiet moment between Touch and Phyllis, which she hopes is the first of many kisses. Phyllis’s bond with Touch has been growing all season, so the payoff feels earned.

The episode leaves everyone under one roof, with Joe, Touch, Leon, Cathy and Phyllis all inside Sipho’s castle. That convergence looks like the setup for the finale, which arrives September 30. Even so, the reviewer points out that the season’s biggest misstep has been cramming too much plot into each hour.
Cathy’s fate is the most delicate thread. Before this episode, she called the police and gloated that everyone, including her own husband, might go to jail. Even if she saves the day, Leon has to decide whether love can survive a betrayal he can never fully trust again.
