Shemar Moore Says He Hasn’t Been Called Back for the Next ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie

Few live-action supporting characters in the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog‘ movies have had a stranger journey than Randall, the charming groom who turned out to be a government agent. Now the actor behind him is in the spotlight again, and the conversation around his future in the franchise has taken a sharp turn on social media.

Shemar Moore joined the series in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2′ as Randall, the fiancé of Natasha Rothwell’s Rachel. He was later revealed to be an undercover agent for G.U.N., assigned to apprehend Sonic and Tails, but he and Rachel reconcile before the ending. The pair only returned in a cameo in the third film, when Tom and Maddie used Tails’ technology to disguise themselves as Randall and Rachel.

With the fourth film now filmed, fans have been asking whether Randall would be back. Moore has weighed in, and the details are more nuanced than some headlines suggest. A post from The Hollywood Handle on X, citing Screen Rant, claimed he “will not return” as Randall, and it quickly picked up over 500 likes.

In an interview with Screen Rant’s Grant Hermanns for its ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ cover story, Moore called his experience on the first two movies fun. He said many of his recent fan encounters have been about the ‘Sonic’ films rather than ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘The Young and the Restless’ or ‘S.W.A.T.’.

More importantly, Screen Rant reports that Moore indicated he has yet to be contacted about returning for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’. That is not the same as being written out, and the outlet notes it is interesting given the live-action shoot ran from March to May. It also points out that secrecy and non-disclosure agreements are common on franchise sets, so an actor may have to keep the true nature of a return quiet.

Moore added that he wants more family-friendly work for his young daughter Frankie, so she has something to watch other than “Daddy scowling and shooting bad guys.” He also pointed to producer Neal H. Moritz, who also produces the ‘S.W.A.T.’ series, saying Moritz has his number and would “catch some smoke” without him. As Moore told Screen Rant, “my daughter demands it.”

In short, the actor says he hasn’t been called, and there is no confirmation either way. The idea that he has been ruled out appears to go further than what he said.

The publicly announced lineup doesn’t include Randall or Rachel so far. The confirmed cast includes Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie, and Kristen Bell as Amy Rose. Newcomers Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade round it out in undisclosed roles.

Jeff Fowler is back in the director’s chair, and principal photography began in March 2026 and wrapped in May. The film draws elements from the video game ‘Sonic CD’ and will feature Metal Sonic. Paramount has it set for release on March 19, 2027.

The stakes are high for a franchise that has grown steadily. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ earned $405.4 million worldwide, and the third film climbed to $492.2 million.

Moore has no shortage of work in the meantime. ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ premieres on Starz this fall, with Moore back as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson leading an experimental unit of young recruits. The Wrap’s review notes he slips back into the role like he never left.

That busy schedule makes a voiceover or cameo appearance easier than a big commitment, and Randall’s role in the films has always been comparatively small. Whether he shows up in some form remains an open question, and Paramount hasn’t commented.
