‘The Beast in Me’ Gets a Surprise Renewal at Netflix With Claire Danes Set to Return

Few shows have gone from limited series to ongoing franchise as suddenly as this one. Netflix’s tense psychological thriller was conceived as a self-contained story, won awards as one, and left viewers with a definitive ending. Now the streamer has changed course, and ‘The Beast in Me‘ is officially coming back.

The show launched on Netflix in November 2025 as an eight-episode drama from creator Gabe Rotter, with Howard Gordon serving as showrunner. It follows Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), an acclaimed author who has receded from public life after the death of her young son. She becomes intrigued by her new neighbor Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a real estate executive who allegedly killed his wife.

That story reached a final confrontation in the finale, when Nile was exposed as a serial killer after trying to frame Aggie. It felt like an ending, which is why Thursday’s news landed as a genuine surprise. Netflix announced that the series has been renewed for Season 2, with Danes returning to star as Aggie and executive produce.

Gordon remains attached, but he will serve as co-showrunner alongside Daniel Pearle, a Season 1 writer and executive producer. As part of the renewal, Gordon has signed an overall deal with Netflix through his Teakwood Lane Productions banner, under which he will develop new series for the streamer. Gordon told Variety the team had always said it would only do a second season if it found “a story that was worthy of the first.”

Notably, Netflix did not say whether Rhys will return, and no plot details have been shared. Given how the first season ended, that is the biggest open question. Production is expected to begin in New Jersey this November.

The renewal also changes the show’s awards status. Because Danes is returning as Aggie, the series will shift from the limited series category to the drama series category for future Emmys, according to TheWrap.

The decision is backed by strong numbers. The series debuted at No. 1 in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and reached the top 10 in 88 countries, racking up 43 million views in its first seven weeks. In the US, it spent eight weeks on Nielsen’s streaming charts for original series and accumulated just under 97 million hours of watch time.

It was also a major awards player. The show earned nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and lead acting nods for both Danes and Rhys, and it won two: Lead Actor and Original Dramatic Score. Rhys made history by becoming the first performer to win two lead acting categories in the same year, adding the comedy trophy for Apple TV’s ‘Widow’s Bay’, and the first with a career sweep of all three lead acting categories after his earlier win for ‘The Americans’.

Netflix’s head of scripted series, Jinny Howe, said the series captivated global audiences and delivered extraordinary performances led by Danes. The streamer described the deal with Gordon as a partnership that welcomes him to the Netflix family.

‘The Beast in Me’ is part of a wider pattern of shows that start as limited series and then continue. The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that the phenomenon of series being un-renewed is established at this point, and now the reverse is happening too. The move follows the precedent set by ‘The White Lotus’, which shifted categories at the Emmys.

For the creative team, the challenge will be delivering something that feels like a natural evolution rather than a cash-in. Gordon, who is known for ‘Homeland’ and ’24’, reunited with Danes on the show, and their partnership is clearly one of the reasons the streamer wanted more.

The supporting cast from Season 1 included Brittany Snow, Natalie Morales and Jonathan Banks, and executive producers include Conan O’Brien and Jodie Foster. It remains to be seen who else will return and what mystery will draw Aggie back in.
