Lee Child Warns ‘Reacher’ Is Heading Somewhere Very Dark With Its Next Season

Jack Reacher has never been family viewing. The Prime Video hit is built on brutal fistfights, grisly villains and a hero who solves problems with a level of violence that would make most action stars wince. Even so, the author of the books says the next chapter pushes into territory he wasn’t sure could be put on screen.

Season 4 of ‘Reacher’ premiered on August 12, with Alan Ritchson returning as the drifter, and it went on to log roughly 5.5 billion viewing minutes across four weeks at the top of Nielsen’s US streaming rankings. Its finale arrived on September 16, the same day as the full first season of the spin-off ‘Neagley’. With the show still riding that wave, attention has moved to what comes next.

Now Lee Child has weighed in. Speaking exclusively to Collider in support of his new novel ‘Chain Reaction’, the author said Season 5 will adapt ‘Make Me’, and he admitted he doesn’t know how Prime Video will pull it off. Child told Collider that “that is a brutal story. I mean, it’s a disgusting story, really.” He also said its material is not fit for family consumption.

The novel, the 20th Jack Reacher book, opens with Reacher stepping off a train in the small town of Mother’s Rest, curious about its unusual name. There he meets private investigator Michelle Chang, whose colleague disappeared while investigating the town. What looks like a missing-person case gradually becomes something much worse.

The horror lies in the operation hiding in plain sight, which exploits vulnerable people for profit. Screen Rant has described the book as widely regarded as Child’s most disturbing, and Collider’s own headline calls the season the show’s most “disgusting” chapter yet. Prime Video confirmed the adaptation at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

That leaves the show with a narrow line to walk. Collider noted that if Prime Video removes too much, it risks losing what makes Mother’s Rest so profoundly sinister, but if it reproduces everything too faithfully, it runs into exactly the problem Child identifies. Of course, nobody has ever accused Reacher of being family viewing, so the series may be able to go further than most.

Child stressed that no details of the eventual screen version have been confirmed. Other commentators have raised a different concern, that the story overlaps with the formula of Season 4 and even with ‘Neagley’. That could make execution the key challenge.

Filming is well underway. Ritchson announced the start of production in July, and cameras began rolling on July 20 in Ontario, Canada. Reports say all eight scripts were finished ahead of schedule, and the show was renewed in May, months before Season 4 arrived.

Amazon has also confirmed four new cast members for the season: Amanda Ip, Jay Baruchel, Ciara Bravo and Kevin Durand will star opposite Ritchson. Nick Santora remains showrunner, and the series is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.

No release date has been announced. Looking at the show’s history, with about 1.5 years between seasons on average, GamesRadar expects the next season as early as December 2027 or early 2028. Men’s Journal reasoned that it could arrive next fall, in 2027, given the shorter turnaround.

In the meantime, Child has plenty to keep fans busy. ‘Chain Reaction’ arrives October 20, and he will co-write ‘Zero Margin’, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe in spring 2027. That gives readers a way to prepare for one of the darkest stories in the franchise.
