Kevin Feige Reveals Florence Pugh’s Yelena Is the Secret Backbone of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios has spent years quietly building toward its next mega-crossover, carefully doling out casting reveals, concept art and cryptic comments to keep fans guessing about who will actually carry ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ With a cast list stretching across multiple franchises and timelines, pinning down the film’s true emotional center has become something of a parlor game among devoted fans.

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has spent the last several years quietly climbing the ranks of that ensemble, evolving from a scene-stealing supporting player into one of the studio’s most trusted assets. Her journey from ‘Black Widow’ through ‘Hawkeye’ and into the lead of ‘Thunderbolts*’ has positioned her as a character Marvel seems increasingly unwilling to sideline.

Now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed just how central she’ll be. In a new Vanity Fair cover story spotlighting Pugh, Feige indicated that Yelena will function as a throughline anchoring the sprawling narrative of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ from start to finish, according to the magazine’s exclusive profile.

That framing tracks with comments Feige made earlier this year at BiliBiliWorld in Shanghai, where he first signaled just how significant Yelena’s role would become. Speaking on stage in July, he told the crowd, “If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday. Yelena plays a big part in that,” before teasing that fans “might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Pugh’s Yelena first appeared in 2021’s ‘Black Widow’ as Natasha Romanoff’s sharp-tongued adoptive sister, quickly becoming a fan favorite for her comedic timing and emotional depth. She returned for a supporting arc in ‘Hawkeye’ before stepping into a lead role in 2025’s ‘Thunderbolts*,’ a film that saw her team rebrand itself as the New Avengers by its conclusion.

That rebranding set the stage for her expanded presence in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ where she’s expected to reunite with fellow Thunderbolts members like Red Guardian, Winter Soldier and U.S. Agent as part of the larger New Avengers unit. With the team now positioned as a central faction within the film’s massive roster, Yelena’s arc appears to be reaching a payoff years in the making.

Feige’s earlier tease also hinted that audiences wouldn’t have to wait until December to see more of the character, pointing toward a possible appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the only Marvel Studios theatrical release scheduled before ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters.

The Vanity Fair feature arrives as part of the magazine’s October 2026 issue, which marks the return of its New Establishment franchise and names Pugh a “Renaissance Woman” alongside a lineup of major figures across entertainment, business and culture. The cover shoot, photographed by Nadine Ijewere, lands during an especially packed stretch for the actress.

Pugh recently appeared at Netflix’s first-ever UK Upfront to promote her upcoming series ‘East of Eden,’ adding another high-profile project to a résumé that already includes ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.’ Between prestige television, blockbuster franchise work and now a major magazine honor, the timing of Feige’s comments feels far from coincidental.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Marvel appears determined to keep Yelena squarely in the conversation leading up to release. Whether she ultimately leads a splinter team, squares off directly with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, or simply serves as the audience’s emotional through-line remains to be seen, but Feige’s comments suggest her role will carry real narrative weight rather than serve as a passing cameo.

For a character who started out as comic relief in the shadow of her more famous sister, that kind of billing marks a significant turning point. It also raises the stakes considerably for how ‘Doomsday’ handles its massive ensemble, given how much responsibility now appears to rest on Pugh’s shoulders.
