Denise Richards Brings the Heat as She Recreates Her Legendary ‘Wild Things’ Pool Scene
Some film moments become so ingrained in pop culture that they follow an actress for decades, no matter how many other roles come after. For Denise Richards, that moment has always been the swimming pool scene from ‘Wild Things,’ a sequence that’s remained one of the most talked-about images from late-1990s cinema.
Richards has built a wide-ranging career since then, moving through blockbuster action films, a Bond franchise entry and eventually reality television, yet ‘Wild Things’ has continued to define her public image more than any other project. Now Richards has revisited that legacy directly. The actress recreated the film’s famous pool scene for a new photo shoot, 28 years after the 1998 erotic thriller, which co-starred Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell, first hit theaters, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Hair stylist and makeup artist Pamela Brogardi shared a photo and video from the session on Instagram, showing Richards submerged in a pool with her hair slicked back, staring directly into the camera in a callback to the original scene. “Sneak peek from today’s shoot,” Brogardi wrote in the caption accompanying the post.
Richards also shared glimpses of herself preparing for the shoot on her Instagram Stories, wearing a black bikini paired with a sheer black cover-up. The reaction across social media was immediate, with fans and fellow celebrities flooding the comments with speculation about whether the shoot was a deliberate ‘Wild Things’ homage.
The original film cemented Richards as one of the era’s most recognizable stars, coming during a stretch that also included ‘Starship Troopers’ and the James Bond installment ‘The World Is Not Enough.’ Decades later, she pivoted into reality television with a stint on ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,’ broadening her audience well beyond her earlier film work.
Despite that range, ‘Wild Things’ has remained the project most closely tied to her name, a legacy she’s addressed directly as her own children have grown older and become more aware of her filmography.
Richards has spoken candidly about how strange it feels for her kids to encounter that side of her career secondhand. “It’s weird for them, to see their mom in something that’s sexy or different. I think it would be very rude for me if it were my parents,” she told Yahoo, reflecting on how friends have started filling her daughters in on details of her past work.
Richards shares daughters Sam, 22, and Lola, 21, with ex-husband Charlie Sheen, whom she divorced in 2006, and later adopted daughter Eloise in 2011. That generational gap has clearly shaped how she thinks about revisiting a role like this one, even as she remains comfortable owning the moment publicly.
Choosing to recreate the scene now, nearly three decades after the film’s release, suggests Richards isn’t shying away from the role that made her a household name, even as her career has expanded into entirely different territory. If anything, the response to the new photo shoot proves the scene has lost none of its cultural staying power.
For an image that’s been referenced, parodied and revisited countless times since 1998, Richards stepping back into the pool herself feels like a fitting way to acknowledge just how much that single scene has shaped her public legacy.
