‘Nobody Wants This’ Star Adam Brody Calls Gaza War ‘a Genocide’

Adam Brody has spent the past year and a half enjoying a career resurgence few could have predicted, transforming his role as a charming rabbi on Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This‘ into one of the most talked-about performances of the streaming era. That newfound platform has come with an unusual amount of scrutiny, given how directly his character intersects with questions of faith and Jewish identity.

Brody has generally kept his personal political views separate from that public-facing role, even as conversations around Israel and Gaza have grown increasingly unavoidable across Hollywood. That reticence changed this week, with the actor addressing the war directly for what appears to be the first time in a public setting.

Speaking with GQ ahead of ‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 3, Brody was asked directly about his views on the conflict and didn’t hold back. “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine,” he said, according to comments reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Brody expanded on that stance, framing the ongoing devastation as something that should have reached a turning point long ago. “It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago,” he continued. “I’m hopeful that another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping that situation be as awful as it is.”

Prior to this interview, Brody acknowledged he’d largely avoided discussing the war publicly, despite having strong private opinions on the matter. When asked how the conflict had factored into his broader political activism, he was candid about that gap. “Truthfully, it hasn’t,” he said. “I have spoken a lot about it privately. I haven’t spoken much about it publicly.”

That admission adds context to why his comments have drawn particular attention. Brody plays Rabbi Noah Roklov in the Erin Foster-created series, a role that’s made him one of the more visible Jewish figures on television, which makes his willingness to speak out notable regardless of where audiences land on the underlying politics.

The characterization of Israel’s military campaign as a genocide remains a contested and widely disputed claim, with different international bodies, governments and commentators offering sharply divergent assessments of the conflict. Brody’s comments reflect his personal view on the matter rather than a settled consensus, and they arrive amid a broader wave of Hollywood figures speaking out on the subject in recent weeks.

Brody’s remarks follow a string of similar statements from other prominent entertainment figures. Actors including Hannah Einbinder and Wallace Shawn have previously used the word genocide to describe the conflict, while others such as Mandy Patinkin have criticized the war without going that far in their language.

The timing also coincides with heightened protest activity in the industry, including a demonstration outside the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where roughly 100 people, including Einbinder and Susan Sarandon, were detained while protesting the arrival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
