A Beloved War Movie Is Still Holding Strong on Hulu’s Chart as the Tarantino Universe Keeps Expanding
Quentin Tarantino fans have spent years parsing every scrap of news for clues about what the director will do next. Between a scrapped script, a stage play in the works, and a self-imposed ten-film retirement plan, actual updates from the filmmaker himself have been rare, which makes any Tarantino-adjacent activity feel like a bigger deal than it might otherwise.
That scarcity has made his existing filmography feel more valuable than ever to streaming platforms looking for reliable catalog titles. Genre staples and nostalgia picks dominate a lot of these charts these days, sitting comfortably alongside newer action fare and studio comedies rather than getting buried by them.
Right now, ‘Inglourious Basterds’ is one of those steady presences, holding at number 7 on Hulu’s top 10 movies chart without gaining or losing ground, already 20 days into its current run there. It sits comfortably among titles like ‘Road House’ and ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,’ proof that a 2009 war film can still hang with much newer action releases.
The film remains one of Tarantino’s most decorated works. Set in Nazi-occupied France, it follows Shosanna Dreyfus rebuilding her life under a false identity after escaping the massacre of her family, while Lieutenant Aldo Raine leads a squad of Jewish American soldiers on a campaign of retribution against the Third Reich, with the two storylines converging in a cinema during the film’s explosive finale. The film starred Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender, and it premiered in competition at Cannes, where Christoph Waltz won the festival’s Best Actor prize before going on to collect an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for the role.
Its steady chart presence lines up with a fresh wave of attention on the wider Tarantino universe, even without a new Tarantino-directed film on the horizon. Brad Pitt is returning to Cliff Booth, his stuntman character from ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, for a Netflix spin-off titled ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’, directed by David Fincher, which is heading to IMAX for a limited theatrical run before it streams on Netflix as planned.
Tarantino’s own next move remains far murkier. He had spent time developing what was billed as his tenth and final film, reportedly titled ‘The Movie Critic’ and set in 1977, with Brad Pitt attached to reprise the Cliff Booth role, before he ultimately walked away from that project entirely. Sources described the decision as Tarantino simply changing his mind and heading back to the drawing board to figure out what his actual grand finale will look like.
In the meantime, older films like ‘Inglourious Basterds’ are left doing a lot of the heavy lifting for anyone craving new Tarantino content. Its ability to keep a firm grip on a streaming top 10 more than fifteen years after release says less about algorithmic luck and more about how durable his filmography remains, one cinema-set revenge plot at a time.
