Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ Unleashes Terrifying New Trailer and a Full Moon Mystery Game

Robert Eggers has spent the past decade building anticipation for his projects through carefully doled-out fragments rather than sweeping marketing campaigns, letting atmosphere and mystery do most of the heavy lifting. That approach has served him well through ‘The Witch,’ ‘The Lighthouse’ and most recently ‘Nosferatu,’ and his upcoming werewolf film appears to be following the same slow-burn playbook.

Focus Features has kept much of ‘Werwulf‘s’ story deliberately obscured since its first trailer dropped in June, offering only glimpses of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s tortured protagonist and hints of the curse haunting his family. That restraint has only fueled speculation among horror fans eager to see how Eggers reinvents yet another classic monster.

That wait is now over, at least partially. A new trailer for Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ has officially been released, giving audiences a clearer picture of the film’s central conflict ahead of its December 25 theatrical debut. The footage introduces Lily-Rose Depp as the wife of Taylor-Johnson’s cursed protagonist, alongside Willem Dafoe as a knight determined to rid the land of the wolves plaguing the region.

The new footage builds directly on marketing that’s unfolded in careful, deliberate stages tied to actual full moons. The first trailer arrived June 29, followed by a poster on July 29 and the first wave of merchandise on August 28, with this newest trailer landing on yet another lunar cycle.

Set in 13th century England, ‘Werwulf’ follows a mysterious creature stalking a foggy countryside as local folklore becomes a terrifying reality for the villagers caught in its path. Focus Features has described the film using the tagline “a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within,” a description that leaves much of the specific plot open to interpretation while signaling the kind of bleak, morally fraught territory Eggers has built his career exploring.

Eggers previously teased just how dark the project has become for him personally, describing it as the darkest thing he’s ever written, by far. That kind of framing tracks with the trailer’s grim, filthy aesthetic, which leans into transformation sequences that suggest becoming the creature is its own nightmare rather than a moment of release.

The film reunites Eggers with three of his most frequent collaborators. Taylor-Johnson, Depp and Dafoe all previously worked with the director on ‘Nosferatu,’ which became his highest-grossing film to date with a $181 million worldwide gross following its own Christmas Day release in 2024.

Alongside the new trailer, Focus Features has launched an alternate reality game tied directly to the film’s release timeline. Accessible through DevourethAllMankynde.com, the game challenges fans to track down a hidden “sign” across digital platforms during each full moon between September and November, then decipher it and submit an answer through the site.

Each sign disappears after just 24 hours, meaning players have a narrow window to catch every clue before it vanishes. Fans who successfully complete all three rounds, spanning the September, October and November full moons, are promised a mysterious prize once the final challenge wraps, though Focus has yet to reveal what that reward will actually be.

That kind of interactive marketing gives the ‘Werwulf’ campaign a reason to keep unfolding in the months leading up to release, rather than relying solely on trailers and posters to sustain interest. With three more full moons standing between now and the film’s Christmas Day debut, Eggers and Focus Features clearly intend to keep fans howling for answers right up until the credits roll.
