Andy Muschietti Drops Bombshell Confession: He Made ‘The Flash’ While Drunk, Though We’re Not Sure Whether He’s Joking

Superhero movie sets are typically remembered for grueling shoots, stunt work, and marathon reshoot schedules rather than punchlines. But every so often, a director drops a comment so unexpected that it turns an old project back into a talking point overnight.

That’s exactly what happened with ‘The Flash‘ director Andy Muschietti this week, thanks to an appearance on an unlikely corner of the internet built entirely around puppet comedy.

During a clip from his appearance on ‘Awkward Puppets,’ Muschietti claimed he had made ‘The Flash’ while drunk, insisting the finished result turned out fantastic. The show’s host, a puppet character known as Doll, fired back that this explained a lot, a jab that quickly became the moment’s punchline online.

The setting itself adds an extra layer to the joke. ‘Awkward Puppets’ is the puppet-driven comedy series created by Rudy Mancuso, who played Albert Desmond, better known as Chunk, in ‘The Flash.’

Muschietti and Mancuso have stayed close collaborators well beyond that film. Andy and his sister, producer Barbara Muschietti, are set to produce Mancuso’s upcoming project ‘Stand-In’ for Amazon MGM Studios, based on a story Muschietti himself helped develop.

‘The Flash’ itself remains one of the more infamous productions in recent superhero movie history, not for anything that happened on screen, but for everything that happened around it. The film’s road to theaters was weighed down for years by delays, reshoots, and the off-screen controversies surrounding star Ezra Miller, and it ultimately left Warner Bros. with losses of around $200 million.

Story-wise, the film pulled from the ‘Flashpoint’ comic arc, following Barry Allen as he traveled back in time in an attempt to prevent his mother’s murder. That decision triggered a ripple effect across the timeline, bringing back Michael Keaton’s Batman more than three decades after he last played the character.

Fan reaction to Muschietti’s puppet-show confession has been predictably split. Some commenters leaned into the joke, with one calling the whole film a waste and lamenting that Muschietti had ever been picked to direct a Batman-adjacent project in the first place.

Others took a lighter approach, joking that the director had better stay sober for any future work on ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ a nod to the long-gestating DC Universe project still associated with Keaton’s Batman.

There were defenders in the replies too, with several fans pointing out the comment was an obvious joke and that no filmmaker could realistically direct an entire blockbuster while intoxicated. Those same commenters were quick to note Muschietti’s more recent work has been getting real praise.

That praise centers on HBO’s ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ the prequel series to Muschietti’s ‘It’ films, which brought Bill Skarsgård back as Pennywise. Muschietti developed the series and directed four of its nine episodes, and a second season is already in the works, reportedly drawing from a 1930s-set subplot buried in Stephen King’s original novel.

Whatever the truth behind the joke, it’s a reminder of how differently directors can be received depending on the format. A quip made on a puppet comedy show carries a very different weight than one made in a traditional press junket, yet it still managed to reignite conversation around a movie that’s been mostly out of the spotlight since its 2023 release.

Whether Muschietti was being fully serious or simply riffing for the cameras, the moment has clearly struck a nerve with DC fans who still have complicated feelings about how ‘The Flash’ turned out.
