Alan Ritchson’s ‘Motor City’ Just Hit a Major Streaming Milestone a Month After Its VOD Debut

Theatrical box office numbers don’t always tell the full story of a movie’s staying power, and that’s especially true for action thrillers that find a second life once they hit digital platforms. Some films fade quickly after their VOD debut, while others quietly settle in and refuse to budge.

‘Motor City‘ has fallen firmly into the second category, continuing to hold its ground on one of the industry’s most closely watched streaming charts well after its initial release window.

According to data from FlixPatrol, ‘Motor City’ has just hit thirty days on Amazon VOD’s Top 25 Movies chart in the United States, marking a full month of sustained presence on that ranking. That kind of longevity is notable for a film that opened with relatively modest numbers in theaters.

Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, ‘Motor City’ follows John Miller, played by Alan Ritchson, a working-class romantic in 1970s Detroit who falls for a local gangster’s girlfriend. After being framed for a crime he didn’t commit and losing years of his life behind bars, Miller sets out on a mission of revenge against the man who destroyed everything he had.

The film leans heavily into a stripped-down storytelling approach, using minimal dialogue throughout its runtime and instead letting a rock soundtrack and Ritchson’s physical, action-driven performance carry much of the narrative. Alongside Ritchson, the cast includes Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce, and Shailene Woodley.

‘Motor City’ first premiered in the Venice Spotlight section of the Venice International Film Festival back in August 2025, well ahead of its eventual United States theatrical release on July 24, 2026. Despite a production budget of thirty million dollars, the film only managed to pull in around three million dollars domestically during its theatrical run.

That modest box office performance makes its current streaming success particularly striking. Since landing on VOD, the film has continued attracting steady viewership, translating into the kind of sustained chart presence that box office numbers alone failed to predict.

For context, ‘Motor City’ still trails several other long-running titles currently sitting on the same Amazon VOD chart. Sydney Sweeney’s psychological thriller ‘The Housemaid’ currently leads the pack at an impressive two hundred and thirty-three days, while Chris Pratt’s video game adaptation ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has held on for one hundred and nineteen days.

Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey’ and the biopic ‘Michael’ round out the list of other titles that have maintained similarly extended runs on the chart, at one hundred and fourteen and one hundred and four days respectively. Against that backdrop, ‘Motor City’ crossing the thirty-day mark places it in solid company among films that have found real staying power well past their initial release window.

Ritchson has built a reputation in recent years for headlining exactly this kind of stripped-down, hard-hitting action vehicle, and ‘Motor City’ fits comfortably within that pattern. The film’s willingness to prioritize atmosphere and physicality over dialogue-heavy exposition appears to be resonating with viewers streaming it at home, even if it didn’t translate into a strong theatrical opening.

Whether ‘Motor City’ can eventually challenge some of the chart’s longer-running leaders remains to be seen, but hitting a full month on Amazon’s Top 25 is already a meaningful milestone for a film that entered its digital release with modest expectations. It’s a reminder that streaming performance and theatrical performance don’t always move in lockstep.
