‘Don’t Breathe 3’ Is Officially Happening, and Fede Álvarez Just Confirmed the Original Cast Is Coming Back
Horror anniversaries have a way of turning into something bigger than a simple victory lap, and this week’s celebration of ‘Don’t Breathe‘ proved exactly why. Fans who grew up terrified of a certain blind war veteran got more than nostalgia when the film’s key players reunited for a milestone screening.
The gathering marked ten years since ‘Don’t Breathe’ first crept into theaters, becoming one of the more unexpected horror successes of its era thanks to Fede Álvarez’s tense, home-invasion premise. What started as a victory lap for a beloved cult favorite quickly turned into a night fans won’t stop talking about.
That’s because Álvarez used the moment to confirm that ‘Don’t Breathe 3’ is now officially in the works. The director revealed he has already written a script, and that original stars Jane Levy and Stephen Lang are both set to return to their respective roles as Rocky and the Blind Man.
The announcement came during a tenth-anniversary screening of ‘Don’t Breathe’ at Beyond Fest, held on September 26 at the MUBI Theatre inside the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The event’s Q&A lineup reportedly included Álvarez, co-writer Rodo Sayagues, Levy, Lang, and Dylan Minnette, giving longtime fans a rare chance to hear directly from the people who built the franchise.
Bringing Levy back into the fold carries real weight given how the franchise has evolved since 2016. Álvarez and Levy first worked together on 2013’s ‘Evil Dead’ before reteaming for the original ‘Don’t Breathe,’ where her character Rocky was a Detroit thief hoping to escape a dead-end life through one final score.
That plan spiraled into a nightmare once Rocky and her friends targeted the wrong house, and Lang’s blind, war-veteran homeowner turned out to be far more dangerous than anyone expected. The film’s blend of home-invasion suspense and brutal twists helped it stand out in a crowded horror landscape and turned both Rocky and the character known only as the Blind Man into genre icons.
‘Don’t Breathe 2’ arrived in 2021 without Levy, instead following Lang’s character years later as he attempted to rescue a kidnapped girl, this time with Sayagues directing from a script he co-wrote with Álvarez. Her absence left Rocky’s fate feeling unresolved for a lot of fans, which is part of why news of her return for a third installment has generated so much excitement so quickly.
This return also lands at an interesting point in Levy’s career, as she continues to lean into the genre that first put her on the map. Beyond the ‘Don’t Breathe’ news, she also stars alongside Jessica Rothe in the slasher film ‘River,’ which premiered at TIFF and drew enough attention from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse to land a theatrical release date of January 15, 2027.
Whether Levy also returns as Mia in a potential ‘Evil Dead’ revival remains unconfirmed, but the timing has fans buzzing about the possibility regardless. Having Álvarez back at the writing desk for ‘Don’t Breathe 3,’ paired with two of his most memorable collaborators reprising their roles, suggests the studio is treating this less like a cash grab sequel and more like a proper continuation of Rocky and the Blind Man’s story.
For now, there’s no word yet on a director, a release window, or how the story will pick up after the events of the second film. But given how quickly this update spread following Beyond Fest, expect more details to surface as ‘Don’t Breathe 3’ moves from script to production.

The reunion also reinforces just how much affection still exists for the original film a decade later, especially among horror fans who’ve watched the genre shift dramatically since 2016. Few home-invasion thrillers have managed to build the kind of lasting cultural footprint that ‘Don’t Breathe’ has, and a proper sequel featuring its two most iconic characters together again feels like a fitting way to mark that legacy.
