‘One Piece’ Just Ended Its Year on a Massive Cliffhanger, and Fans Have to Wait Until 2027 for More

Few anime franchises command the kind of year-round devotion that ‘One Piece‘ has built over the better part of three decades. Even as the series has slowed its release pace in recent years, fans have continued showing up in massive numbers for every new arc and every twist Eiichiro Oda throws their way.

That loyalty has been tested more than usual in 2026, as the anime shifted away from its long-running weekly format toward something far more sporadic. The Elbaph Arc kicked off this spring after a lengthy winter hiatus, giving fans a fresh batch of episodes to dig into after months without new content.

Now that run has officially wrapped, with ‘One Piece’ confirming that Episode 1180 was the final episode of the year and that the anime won’t return with new episodes until 2027. The confirmation came straight from the franchise’s official social media account, closing the book on this year’s chapter of the story on a notably dark note.

Episode 1180, titled “Elbaph in Despair – Diabolical Covenant, ‘Domi Reversi,'” premiered on September 27 and began streaming on Crunchyroll the same day, with a Netflix release set to follow the following week. The episode continues the fallout from Imu seizing control of Gunko, pushing the Giants of Elbaph into an even more dire situation than fans had anticipated.

This wrap-up reflects a broader change in how Toei Animation is now handling the series going forward. Rather than airing continuously throughout the year as it has since debuting in October 1999, ‘One Piece’ has moved to a two-cour seasonal model that caps output at roughly 26 episodes annually, with planned gaps built in between batches.

That shift was already visible earlier this year, when the anime went on hiatus from January through March before the Elbaph Arc picked back up in April. With Episode 1180 marking the other bookend of that structure, fans are now looking at another extended wait before the story resumes, though Toei has not yet confirmed an exact return date for 2027.

Adding another layer to the year’s development, actor Yuichi Nakamura joined the cast during this stretch as the voice of Loki, debuting alongside the newly introduced Knights of God. It’s the kind of casting update that keeps longtime viewers engaged even during a season defined largely by setup and tension rather than resolution.

Beyond the TV anime, ‘One Piece’ also has significant film plans already on the books heading into its next phase. ‘One Piece Film God Valley’ is set for release in Summer 2027, framed as a major thirtieth-anniversary project tied to one of the franchise’s most pivotal historical mysteries.

A second film, ‘One Piece Film Baad,’ has also been confirmed, though it isn’t expected until 2029. Both projects suggest Oda and the broader production team are thinking well beyond the current arc as they plan out the next several years of the franchise’s future.

None of this comes as much of a surprise given just how enormous ‘One Piece’ has become as a piece of intellectual property. The manga itself surpassed 600 million copies in circulation worldwide earlier this year, a staggering figure for a series that began publication back in 1997 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022.

With the anime now on pause until next year, fans are left to speculate about where the story goes from here, especially with Imu’s growing influence over Elbaph left dangling as the year’s final image. Given how much groundwork this season laid, the eventual return in 2027 has a lot riding on it already.
