‘Lanterns’ Finale Trailer Teases Hal Jordan’s Return and a Fearsome Yellow Lantern Threat

Few DC Universe projects have carried as much pressure as ‘Lanterns‘, and the ‘Lanterns’ finale is now days away. The HBO series has spent weeks turning a small Nebraska town into the center of one of the DCU’s most gripping whodunits. Fans have been studying every frame of every promo for clues.

The show has kept a steady weekly rhythm since launch. ‘Lanterns’ premiered on August 16, 2026, pairing John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, with veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The first season runs 8 episodes, with a new one arriving every Sunday through October 4.

The penultimate episode barely had time to sink in before the next promo arrived. The first trailer for the season finale was shared by DiscussingFilm on September 28, and the post had already passed 615,000 views. The clip, which runs under 40 seconds, was originally posted by DC Film News on X.

Its focus is telling. The promo centers on fear, the emotion that powers the Yellow Lantern Corps in DC Comics lore. That suggests one Green Lantern’s story might not be over, and that a fear-fueled force is coming.

The theme isn’t random. John grew up with parents who trained him to be fearless from age 5. Fear has been quietly running through his story since the beginning.

Hal’s history adds another layer. Hal trained under Thaal Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), who went rogue after yellow fear energy consumed him. Sinestro killed one of the twelve Guardians during a failed coup, which ultimately led to his expulsion from the Corps.

Two characters look set to shape the hour. Sinestro is playing a larger role in the next episode, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is coming back for the second time this season. That is a lot of cosmic firepower for a series that spent most of its run on Earth.

It all builds on what came before. In Episode 7, John and Hal’s hologram discovered a portal to another planet hidden inside Hal’s voice-locked storage vault, then came face-to-face with Sinestro himself. The episode also revealed a Jordan family history of depression, leading John to suspect Hal may have died by suicide.

Despite all the progress, the central question remains open. The mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s death in Rushville, Nebraska, remains unsolved heading into the final hour. The finale promises answers about Rushville, what happened to Sinestro, and the person responsible, and the show has already revealed that this mystery traces back to a 2016 Manhunter incident.

The creative team behind it is a familiar one. Co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King wrote the finale, just as they previously co-wrote the series’ pilot. Bookending the season with the same writers should give the final hour a sense of full-circle payoff.

The wider DCU implications are already fueling speculation. Fans are waiting to see whether the Yellow Lantern Corps gets set up for the wider DCU, and it remains unclear whether the finale will lay groundwork for John and Guy’s upcoming appearance in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in 2027. There is also the question of what comes after. The finale, titled “Dirt and Stars,” premieres Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. HBO has yet to announce a formal season 2 renewal, though a writers’ room has opened for a potential second season, according to Lindelof.

The stakes feel higher because of the franchise’s history. Given Green Lantern’s lackluster live-action history, the strong audience response is being seen as a testament to the show’s quality. A strong landing on Sunday could go a long way toward cementing that reputation.
