Dakota Johnson has spent the past few weeks turning heads on red carpets. Between a busy press tour and a string of daring outfits, her fashion moments have become as talked about as the film she is promoting. The lead-up set the tone. During the ‘Verity’ press tour, she arrived at the film’s London premiere in an ivory lace naked dress with Fleur du Mal lingerie, followed by a colorful sheer moment. She also wore a sheer Colleen Allen gown that turned plenty of heads.

‘Verity’ is a psychological romance-thriller that also stars Anne Hathaway, and it hits theaters on October 2. With all that sheer drama behind her, few expected what came next.

Johnson was not previously announced as a presenter, but she showed up at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. It was also her first time attending the VMAs.

She came to present her friend Taylor Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award. Johnson also stars opposite Colin Farrell in Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video, which premiered after Swift’s speech. In her introduction, she praised Swift as a visionary with a relentless drive for perfection.

The outfit is what got people talking. Johnson wore a custom Calvin Klein Collection blush iridescent sequin-embroidered gown, and the shimmering column silhouette is on full display in the photos. It featured beige sequins and a full-coverage lining, offering a decidedly PG take on naked dressing, according to Marie Claire.

The styling stayed quiet on purpose. She paired the gown with her signature bangs and a red manicure, wearing her hair down in a straight, sleek style. A Messika collar necklace covered in tiny diamonds, with a single emerald-cut stone hanging from its base, finished the look.

Reaction has been warm, with a few caveats. One fashion outlet argued the dress deserved a proper red carpet moment, and even wondered what it would have looked like at the ‘Verity’ premiere. Others simply praised it as beautiful and elegant.

Fans were split in a friendly way. Some called it glamorous and a refreshing change from her sheer looks, while others said they prefer her daring premiere outfits. A third group was more interested in her special moment with Swift than in the dress itself.

Johnson’s presence had extra meaning. She is described as Swift’s BFF, and she attended Swift and Travis Kelce’s July wedding. She was also spotted grabbing dinner with the star in late August, so the presenting gig felt personal rather than promotional.

The timing also worked in her favor. With ‘Verity’ arriving in theaters days later, the appearance kept her in the spotlight at one of the year’s biggest music events. It did so without the shock factor that has defined so many of her recent outfits.

Not every star can pivot so cleanly from sheer to sparkle, and Johnson made it look effortless. The blush gown may not have been the boldest thing she has worn this month, but its restraint is exactly what made it stand out.
