Sabrina Carpenter Gets Bleeped at the VMAs After a Cheeky Comeback to Madonna

On Sunday, September 27, Carpenter and Madonna won Best Collaboration at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards for “Bring Your Love.” The award was announced by David Corenswet and Isabel May at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The pair walked out holding hands.
The song appears on Madonna’s ‘Confessions II’ album, which came out in April. It debuted at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May. The duo had also performed it together at Coachella earlier this year.
Madonna took the mic first and told what she called a true story. She said she reached out to Carpenter’s team about working together, and when 5 days passed without a connection, she sent Carpenter a DM. Carpenter replied, and within weeks they were in the studio.
She joked that everyone knows how impatient she is. She also praised Carpenter’s professionalism and said the two balance each other out, with one showing up late and the other early. She added that they both write lyrics on paper, and described the song as being about people who think they know you better than you know yourself.
Carpenter, who was laughing during the story, stepped up to defend her team. She joked that her team was panicking backstage, using a curse word that triggered the broadcast delay and cut the audio. Viewers at home were confused as the sound dropped out.
According to reports, she didn’t make any innuendos. She simply dropped one word that the network wasn’t willing to air. Her follow-up came through clearly, as she noted that her team does respond to people but that she responds faster, and that a direct line to her is always the best way to get in touch.
The exchange ended on a friendly note. Madonna embraced Carpenter and said the two would go backstage to have a drink or something. Carpenter signed off by gesturing to her collaborator and telling everyone to give it up for Madonna.
They walked off stage hand in hand to applause. Coverage from GB News described the pair as ending their speech amicably despite the swipe at her management team. Nothing about the moment seemed tense.
The win came shortly after the duo opened the show together. Carpenter played piano while Madonna lounged on top of it, and they sang “Bring Your Love” before Madonna continued with a medley from ‘Confessions II.’ Charli xcx joined them, and cameos came from Julia Garner, Sombr, Seth Rogen, Debi Mazar, and Fab 5 Freddy.
It was Madonna’s first VMAs performance in 23 years. The last time she took the stage was in 2003, for a famous kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Madonna also won Artist of the Year, beating Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, and Morgan Wallen.
Social media reaction was overwhelmingly positive. One user called the pairing chaotic, while another said the VMAs feel important again thanks to the performance. The bleeped moment added to the fun instead of dampening it.
