Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Plot Reportedly Revealed: A Dangerous First Mission and a Literal Demon

Few manga franchises carry the weight of ‘Naruto‘. Masashi Kishimoto’s story has printed over 250 million copies in more than 60 countries and territories, and fans have waited a very long time to see it in live action. Lionsgate first secured the rights more than 10 years ago, and the project has bounced through directors and delays ever since.

Momentum finally returned this summer. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who made ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, is writing and directing, and a worldwide casting search launched in July for Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Kishimoto himself said in a statement on the official Naruto site that “miracles are happening to me, one after another.”

Now the first real story details have surfaced. Knight Edge Media reports that it has obtained the movie’s plot synopsis, and it confirms that the film will adapt Naruto’s first mission as a ninja. Lionsgate has not officially released the synopsis, so the wording should be treated as reported.

According to the report, the story unfolds in a breathtaking alternate universe where every child dreams of becoming a ninja. Naruto Uzumaki is described as an exceptionally gifted but challenging new recruit, and he is assigned to his first mission alongside reluctant teammates Sasuke and Sakura.

The mission then turns into something far more dangerous and sinister than anyone anticipated. Naruto is forced to confront his inner demons, including the literal demon that is revealed to be the root of his own power.

That last line points to the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside Naruto since birth, the source of his extraordinary abilities and the reason he has felt like an outcast.

ComicBook.com has suggested the first mission could be the Land of Waves arc, though the synopsis does not name it. That storyline established Team 7’s dynamic in the manga and introduced Zabuza and Haku as its first major antagonists. A Screen Rant piece has also argued that a live-action version should follow a single mission rather than spend too much time explaining the world.

Another possibility, raised by Knight Edge Media, is that the movie will be an original story set in the same universe, with callbacks to specific manga scenes. Nothing is confirmed either way.

The casting details have complicated matters. In July, Lionsgate opened a worldwide casting call for Asian actors over 18 to play 16-year-old versions of Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Then, about 2 weeks ago, a second casting call went out for 13- to 15-year-old actors for Naruto and Sakura specifically.

That leaves it unclear how old the characters will be onscreen. The team is 12 years old in the original manga, and the earlier casting call suggested the film might follow them at 16, as in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’. Some commentators criticized the aging-up as a mistake, while others noted that Kishimoto has publicly endorsed Cretton.

Cretton is co-writing the script with Tasha Huo and producing alongside Jeyun Munford, Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu and Jeremy Latcham. Charles Melton has reportedly been cast as Kakashi Hatake, although no cast member has been officially announced. Production is reportedly set to begin in January in the UK.

There is also some cautious optimism around live-action anime adaptations more broadly. Commentators have pointed to the success of Netflix’s live-action ‘One Piece’ as a sign that studios are showing more dedication to the source material. That contrasts with earlier misfires such as ‘Dragon Ball Evolution’ and ‘Cowboy Bebop’.

A story about a difficult first mission and a demon inside its hero is a promising foundation. It is also a familiar one to fans of the original series, which suggests the movie is aiming to honor the classic beginning rather than reinvent it.
