Stephen King Just Gave ‘The Cycle’ the Ultimate Horror Endorsement, and It’s Coming to Shudder Fast

Genre fans know that a Stephen King quote on a movie poster carries serious weight. The horror icon does not hand out praise lightly, and when he does, it tends to send a film straight onto every fright fan’s must-watch list. That is exactly what just happened with the newest Shudder original making its way through the festival circuit.

The film in question comes from Jordan Downey, a filmmaker who has quietly built a reputation among genre fans over the past few years. His 2018 minimalist monster film ‘The Head Hunter’ opened as the number 1 horror film and holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its economical storytelling. He followed that up by writing and directing the “Stork” segment of the Critics Choice Award-nominated anthology ‘V/H/S/Beyond’.

Now Downey is back with his most ambitious project yet, and Stephen King has thrown his full support behind it. King praised ‘The Cycle’ as “a terrific fright flick,” further describing it as “The Thing meets The Silence of the Lambs.” Both quotes are now front and center in the film’s newly released trailer.

The official logline sets up a dark mystery: “When the body of a man missing for thirty-six years is discovered at the scene of a horrific crime, it’s up to his estranged daughter to unravel his dark past.” The film stars Deborah Ann Woll, known for ‘True Blood’ and ‘Daredevil’, as Meg, the daughter pulled into the investigation, alongside Jeffrey Donovan of ‘Burn Notice’ fame as Marks.

The cast also includes Will Hochman, Jack Doolan, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier, Gretchen Corbett and David Myers Gregory. The film runs 111 minutes. Downey wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Kevin Stewart, who also co-wrote ‘V/H/S/Beyond’ with him.

‘The Cycle’ had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, where it won a Special Mention in the festival’s Horror Features competition. That kind of festival recognition, paired with the King endorsement, has put the film firmly on the radar of genre critics ahead of its streaming debut.

Reviews out of Austin were largely positive. Bloody Disgusting’s coverage highlighted that Fangoria’s EIC Phil Nobile Jr. also praised the film in his own festival roundup, though he cautioned Fangoria readers to see it before reading further coverage because, in his words, “we spoil the shit out of it.”

The film will debut exclusively on Shudder on Friday, Oct. 23, as part of the streamer’s “Season of Screams” programming event. It arrives as a Shudder Original Film, meaning it will not get a theatrical release before landing on the platform.

The project comes from producer James Harris, whose credits include this year’s horror hit ‘Obsession’, along with producer Peter Heller. That pairing has added extra buzz to a film that was already generating attention thanks to King’s comments.

Comparing a new horror film to both ‘The Thing’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ is no small statement. The former is considered one of the defining creature features in the genre, while the latter remains one of the most acclaimed psychological thrillers ever made. Landing a quote that references both suggests ‘The Cycle’ blends visceral dread with something more character-driven and unsettling.

That mix tracks with early trailer reactions. Dread Central called the trailer “super grisly,” noting it “promises some serious gore and terror,” while also calling it “one of the best trailer edits I’ve seen from Shudder in a while.”

Downey’s filmography stretches back to the cult comedy ‘ThanksKilling’, but it is his more recent work that has genre outlets paying closer attention. Between ‘The Head Hunter’, his ‘V/H/S/Beyond’ segment and now ‘The Cycle’, he has built a track record of atmospheric, character-focused horror that stands out in a crowded streaming landscape.

With King’s stamp of approval now attached, ‘The Cycle’ has the kind of momentum that could turn Downey into one of the genre’s most closely watched names going into next year.
