Few films this fall have as much curiosity around them as ‘Digger‘. It is Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since ‘The Revenant’, and it reunites Tom Cruise with Warner Bros. for the first time in a decade. It was shot entirely in VistaVision and shot in the U.K. over six months.

The film follows Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an obscenely wealthy oil magnate whose actions have helped trigger a catastrophic environmental disaster. He then sets out to convince the world that he is the person who can save humanity. Iñárritu has described it as a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions.

The film’s Los Angeles premiere took place Monday, September 28, at the Director’s Village in Westwood, and John Goodman’s ‘Digger’ premiere appearance was one of the night’s most talked-about moments. The 74-year-old actor arrived with his wife, Anna Beth Goodman, 57. He wore a dark suit with a striped shirt and gray tie, while she wore a flowing maroon dress with matching pointed heels.

Goodman’s look has changed dramatically over the years. Outlets reported that he has lost more than 200 pounds, which is well over 90 kilograms.

The change didn’t happen overnight. It began in 2007, when Goodman decided to give up alcohol after what he has described as a three-decade struggle. He has said publicly that his drinking had reached a point where it was affecting everyone around him, and that stopping was a matter of life or death.

Goodman has been candid about how he approached his health. He told ABC he tried a slower, more deliberate path than the crash diets of the past, when he would lose weight and then rebound. He said he focused on movement, exercise and portion control.

Over the years, reports have noted that he worked with health coach Mackie Shilstone and later added walking and boxing to his routine. He has also said he doesn’t want to serve as an example, joking about the risk of the weight returning. That humility has been part of how he discusses the journey.

Anna Beth has been part of that story. The couple married in New Orleans in 1989 and raised their daughter there. Goodman has spoken about his wife’s role in his recovery.

At the premiere, the couple posed affectionately in front of the film’s bright orange backdrop, with Goodman holding her close. Just Jared noted that several cast members brought their spouses, including Riz Ahmed with his wife and Jesse Plemons with Kirsten Dunst.

In the film, Goodman plays President Compson, the President of the United States. He joins a deep cast that includes Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Plemons and Emma D’Arcy. Cruise also produces alongside Iñárritu and Mary Parent.

The role carries a personal note. Goodman suffered a hip injury in the U.K. while filming the movie, Deadline reported in March 2025. He was reportedly scheduled to resume shooting the following week and later appeared at the ‘Smurfs’ premiere in July.

‘Digger’ opens in U.S. theaters and IMAX on Friday, October 2, with international release beginning September 30. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing, and Legendary Pictures is a production company. The film’s marketing has leaned on mystery, with teasers that showed Cruise only in silhouette.

Cruise’s look in the trailer, with thinning gray hair, has already been a talking point. Iñárritu has said he was impressed by the range he discovered in Cruise, and early buzz has focused on the film’s tone. A satirical black comedy with an apocalyptic premise is a big swing.

Goodman’s return to the red carpet has drawn attention because it reflects a personal story as much as a fashion one. Fans have followed his health journey for years, and each public appearance tends to spark new reaction. This one arrived as he celebrates a major new film.

For a performer known for his imposing screen presence, the change is striking. It is also a reminder that recovery can be a long road with many small steps. Judging by the smile on the red carpet, he seems to be enjoying the moment.
